I just received a geomate junior from REI because I wanted to get started and it what I could afford at the moment. I hoping when I can afford to upgrade that I will give it to my 5 yr old son. My question is how do I know when the last time it was updated? Can I search for the puzzle caches? Does anyone have an extra cord that I can attach to the computer to update it. The cords were backordered when I purchase the GPS. The instructions were also very limited. I hope it will be easy to firgure out. I will try it later this morning.

It is discontinued. I would guess it hasn’t been updated in a while. There is software available, however, so that you can load a pocket query to it, assuming you have the update kit that is usually sold with it. For puzzles, you will probably want to use something like GSAK to “correct” the coordinates and create a new PQ before sending it to the GPS. As you probably know, you can enter ONE waypoint manually (the home waypoint), so you could theoretically use this for entering coordinates in the field.

If you bought this recently, I would suggest that you return it and purchase an Etrex 10, which can be had for under $100.

If bought from REI then by all means return it. They have a lifetime guarantee on everything they sell no questions asked. The Jr. has limited usefulness.

Thank you Team Deejay. After getting a chance to use it and finding out it has been discontinue and of course it will limit my geocaching ability I plan to return ASAP. It did work for a cache but it did not have a EarthCache that was close by in the memory.
