No, we’re NOT getting out of caching, but did you ever think of what you would do with all of your caching stuff if you did quit caching? If you’re like us, you have lots of things like swag and bling, containers and camo tape, electronics and TOTTS… you name it! What would you keep, and what would go? How would you get rid of everything you no longer wanted or needed? Would you keep anything back… just in case?

Containers and such, I’d try to find some educational entity…nature center, schol or the like…looking to involve their patrons in the hobby, and pass it on to them. Both of us have recently experienced the “death” of our respective Garmins. We decided to use backups rather than invest in new ones. Our interest has backed off, so we’ll see how this works.

I don’t have a multitude of caches in the wild but the ones I do (mostly ammo cans) would get used for other purposes. I could see the recycling center having to put on a extra shift worker when and if some of those cache hiders would recycle all those plastic containers.

However, we have a lot of containers in many sizes as well as swag that likely wouldn’t make the transition (I keep an eye out for quality containers on a regular basis at Goodwill and other thrift stores)
I already know what I’d probably do, and so far we’ve done it twice. A few times in the past we’ve hosted or co-hosted CITO events, with a *twist*. What we’ve done is select a large park that needs cleanup (e.g. a mile long), mark coordinates for 20 to 30 areas that have a lot of trash, and have assigned areas for most of the participants for cleanup. The assignments are optional but everyone seems to want one. At their assignment (as presented in sealed envelopes) are the coords for their unique and assigned area, with a D/T rating, and at that area they will find a hidden temporary cache container to keep for their efforts, fully camoed with swag and log book. And the caches aren’t micros either; they’re almost all small or regulars. It may sound like overkill, but in large parks there are vast areas that may be off trail that don’t get any attention otherwise. If we were to stop geocaching, this would possibly be the way that we would have our send off, giving back one last time. And in doing so we could part with all of the caching stuff we no longer intended to use.
However, having said that, it’s unlikely that it will ever be our parting gift, since we don’t have any plans to stop caching. We do however, intend to continue hosting an occasional CITO every once in a while. You’re welcome to join us!
01/18/2016 at 6:06 pm #2046227Although we did not get out of caching, it seemed like that when we had to move. Pack up everything we wanted to keep, old souvenirs, goodies for new caches or to give away, find new owners for all our caches and gave them a box of goodies and containers – left all our good ammo cans in the woods in the hands of fellow cachers, and that was nice to have them all adopted. I still have boxes of caching items I have not opened for lack of display space (how can a two bedroom house have less displace than an apartment?). I did put my Wi-Geocaching BOD on the wall of my new den, and enjoy looking at it and all the memories we have with 13 years of caching with wonderful WGA members. I “lurk-in” now and then, so keep it something simple we old folks can follow. Had a nice 40 day vacation in the southeast for Thanksgiving. It’s cold here, but highs in the 30’s are ok when I look at your temps. Wish a very nice New Caching Year to all in the WGA.

01/18/2016 at 7:50 pm #2046229Great to hear from Hotdogs! Hi, Jeff and Bonnie! Wisconsin misses you! And so do we! Hotdogs caches are the best, and we have a few yet to find… if the new owners have left your name on the cache pages. Otherwise, we will be going by memory as to which were yours, unless you have a bookmark of your old WI caches to share.
Glad to know that you lurk here every now and then. 😀
