I placed an EC in Hartland along the IceAge Trail and like all EC listings I had to get explicit permission for the approval. I found the process a bit laborious an jumpthroughhoopy. That was 1 year ago last week. As the IAT now has the “ColdCache” program (EarthCaches along the IAT), they are fully aware of geocaches.

My question is does anyone know of an official policy the IAT has on geocache placement?

Who have you contacted to get permissions for placement (if anyone…not trying to flush out anyone for clandestine placements)?

Contact the owner of the Cold cache bookmark. I do not remember her name, but she works (for?) the IAT group.

Her name is Dolly…she’s a volunteer (I believe). I went through her initially for my EC approval then was bounced to two more folks who actually draw payroll from the foundation. I was hoping there was someone out there who knew of a policy or had other direct dealing with the permission process.

My feeling is that there is no policy and that permission is not (or is in very few cases) being sought from the foundation for placements. I’m not sure if they should be approached by us for the creation of a geocaching policy or not; I’m guessing we would not like what we would be told. Still this is by far the largest trail in the state…and most of the country for that matter.

The biggest issue I see is that much of the trail is not owned by the foundation but rather by the state or private landowners who give permission for folks to walk on it…but it is (in the case of private landowners) still private property.

Lb7 – you stated it well, so much of the trail is private land – I am thinking the Ice Age Trail Alliance really does not have a standing geocaching policy but did adopt the Earth Cache Cold Cache program
