In this season of giving, how many of your favorite points have you given to caches? (Only premium GC members earn favorite points to bestow upon the favorite caches they have found.) Not looking for numbers, just a general idea. All of them? Most of them? Every so often? None of them? When you think of it? Anything else?

We have given out over 3/4 of our favorite points. We always have some in reserve, but that reserve number drops as we find more great caches. Vacation trips eat up a lot of our favorite points. We’ve never been down to our very last favorite point, though… 😉

Interesting thought. Though we’re generous folks in general, we kind of have some “standards” as to what gets a favorite. Amazing locations, great hikes, interesting history or really creative and unique hides are what gets our attention. So, apparently we’ve found a bit over 500 that meet our standards.
For us, we think of them as a way to help highlight really cool caches so that others can sort through in their travels. When favorite points first came out, we thought they were kind of silly, but we’ve found that looking for caches with high numbers of favorite points is usually an indication of something we’d like to visit.

I’ve only given 38% of them, which means only 3.8% of all caches found me have earned them. I must be stingy.

I do give out my favorite points when I like a cache, either for the view, location, interesting container, interesting information, etc. I like to give thanks to the people that take the time to place quality caches. Because I am not a power cacher, I don’t have tons of finds and extra favorite points. I also tend to mostly go looking for the more interesting ones so it can be hard to feel like I have enough points to give out.

384 given out, a balance remaining of 257
we’re pretty stingy giving them out
2 out of 20 finds got them today

About 35%. I agree with all of the stated reasons for giving them out but I have a tendency to award them quite a while after I found the cache.

Often when I revisit a site online or in person and I’m reminded about how much I enjoyed the experience is when the favorite gets handed out. I’m pretty good at avoiding impulse buying also 🙂

We bestow favorite points upon caches that are memorable to us. Most often they are for the same reasons that have been listed, but sometimes our own experiences with the cache is what makes it memorable. Did we see wildlife? Were some plants blooming? Was it just the most spectacular day? Did we have any “adventures” finding the cache? Experiences vary, as do individual interpretations of memorable caches.

We’re pretty lavish with our favorite points. Although we have somewhat of a reserve, we see no reason to hold on to them. Even though they never expire, they don’t earn any interest over time. I enjoy going over our “favorites” list from time to time, and I can remember why each one has a favorite point from us.

“Favorite points” is one thing that GC got right. 😉

I’ve given out 46% of my favorite points. Park and grabs don’t get them. Gotta be a memorable cache.

We have a few P&Gs on our list. Some are placed where there are really cool views. Some WRR caches could be considered P&Gs. We favorited one guardrail cache because there was a nearby forsythia bush in full bloom at the time we found it. One recent P&G was at a spot that brought back memories from almost forty years ago.

Of course, a P&G that is just there for the numbers and is not in a scenic place, especially if it’s urban (for us), will most likely not get one of our fav points.

OK, I take that back. Looking at my favorites list, I count a handful of park n grabs. They got my favorite points for various reasons, but they were all more than just caches for the sake of having a cache.

We’ve given out 420 of 437 favorite votes available. We’ll give them out for nice walks/adventures, creative/unique containers, beautiful scenery, well-written cache pages, great puzzles, or just exceptionally fun experiences. I remember someone (maybe Goldie Diggers?) saying “if you can’t find a cache you like at least 10% of the time, why are you even bothering to go caching?” We like to give positive reinforcement to those who put forth the effort for nicely done caches.

We don’t usually do park & grabs and haven’t ever done a big power trail so that might make our % of awarded fav votes higher than the norm.

We agree with the other posts on why to give Favs. We have only had Premium status for a year, so we got a whole bunch of Favs to hand out all of a sudden. We have not gone backwards awarding them to past finds, that could be a good cold winter day project. We have been rather stingy now, more from forgetting while logging than just being ornery. When looking up caches to go after in a new area, we do pay attention to the Favs count, but have found some pretty lame caches with a lot of Favs, some areas must not have much to compare to! And we have also found some really terrific ones with few or no votes. All in all, we like it as an addition to the whole geocaching package.

We are stingy I guess. We have given out 396 favorite points and have 741 sitting in our bank. I have a pretty high standard for giving out favorites….but give me a nice hike with a few challenges along the way and you can bet that will get a favorite. I think we would have less banked if we actually took the time to backtrack to caches we found before they began giving favorite points….I think part of why I am so stingy is that I pay attention to caches with favorite points, especially when traveling. I have had it a couple of times where I did a cache with a lot of favorite points only to walk away and wonder why….

I just checked and we have given out 72% of our available points. Basically, if we like a cache, it gets a favorite point. We really use favorites to decide what caches to seek on trips, so I appreciate you all being serious about awarding them. Based on some of the caches I found in Vegas, I think people out there award points based on how drunk they are when the find the cache.

I am guessing there is a lot of drunkedness….so that could be interesting…
