To nobody and everybody in particular:

I’ve met the approvers for Wisconsin, and they seem pretty darn smart. However, several geocachers seem to think getting the DNR or other regulatory agencies actively involved in the approval process and perhaps paying a fee to geocache isn’t a bad idea. Let me ask you this: Since the Wisconsin approvers know what they’re doing, what is it YOU don’t understand so badly that you need government help to figure it out?

No, don’t worry about regulating other people, because they’re just as smart as you on average. I bet the guy who “pushes the broom” at work could out snow-shovel you any day because he knows the tricks of getting it done quickly, also called “doing it right.” He doesn’t ask that snow-shoveling be regulated. Ever see someone professionally drywall a room? How smart do you think the average drywaller is? They screw up sheets of drywall and slap some “mud” on it. Ever try this simple process? These and other folks are pretty smart at what they do. I bet they’d make just as good of geocachers as anyone else.

The Wisconsin approvers are pretty smart at what they do also, so let them do their jobs. There’s nothing wrong with explaining geocaching to government agencies so they know what’s going on, but getting them involved and having to ask their permission to geocache is another story. Everything you do is already regulated anyway. Read the WI State Statues if you don’t believe me.

And hey, I used the smiley.

OK Opossum, I have to ask- What are you rambling on about?

We work with land managers simply so they don’t make poor judgement about our sport. We don’t desire more rules, but THEY are likely to know more about their land and the areas they don’t want trampled than we are.

It’s not about regulation; it is about cooperation- something we all could use everywhere we go.

Well, with all that being said, I’d say the DNR and Geocaching go together like vinegar and oil. You have to keep shaking things up so they ”get together”.

It is those who don’t know what the sport is about who are our biggest adversaries. I’m not one to support every rule or law, but I abide by these rules to remain as free as I can. In a perfect world we could all run free and do what we would like and there would be no negative impact. Realize that what our members have accomplished with land managers may be the only thing that has prevented the same people from banning geocaching on those properties. Look around at what has happened in many other states and you will see how some forward thinking on the part of some of our members has made Wisconsin one of the most geocaching friendly states in the nation. Much like fishing and hunting, some regulation is in order to make sure we are able to enjoy the sport for years to come.

Do I like the idea of paying to anything that could be free? Of course not! Will I continue to buy park stickers, boat registration, fishing licenses, etc. in order to do what I love? Absolutely!

It is clear that the sport will continue to grow. With this growth there is no way for geocachers to operate clandestinely, nor do many of them wish to. It is up to those who care about the sport to do whatever we can to ensure it grows in the most positive direction possible.

The WGA and the DNR can go together like wine and cheese. Don’t allow either to spoil, and we will be able to enjoy our sport for a long time to come.

are there no threads on this board that are just for fun?

In the last 5 days, 50% of the topics seem to contain nothing but entertainment. (I really like the geocaching pictures. ) The other 50% seem to provide flame-free information. Is that a good balance or what? Compared to geocaching.com that’s a lot of bang-for-the-buck! The great part is that people usually give sold reasons explaining what they think, instead of some wishy-washy stuff about how they feel.

Sorry Ray, “fun threads” are not allowed here. When someone tries to start one, someone takes offense to it and removes it or starts whining about it until someone else removes it. The problem here is that people take everything WAAAAYYYYY too personally. Those of us who do try to have fun are stifled by the powers that be. So, it’s just easier for us to play in emails back and forth than it is to run the risk of stepping on toes or knocking people out of joint. (Having said that…Dawn, I haven’t heard from you in a while…are you okay?)
