We’re seeing the Palm Pilot IIIxe for a good price, but it doesn’t seem to list our operating system (Windows XP). Would we have a problem?

I could understand if this whole process isn’t so clear.

The Palm Operating System, resides on the little hand-held gadget (the Palm Pilot) not on your home computer.

What you really need is a copy of some software called the “Palm Desktop” for Windows. This is available for free from http://www.palmone.com/us/support/windt.html

This is the program that you actually run on your computer. It’s job is to establish communications with your Palm, via a serial cable (sometimes called a cradle). This program also controls the backup of data to/from your palm. The latest version of this program supports Windows XP, which is what I am running too.

    Hope this helps.

My Palm Pilot came with a software disk for this. That’s cool that you can download it free online as well!

      Complete directions by Dr. Suess…

Here’s an easy game to play
Here’s an easy thing to say:

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
And the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
And the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
Then the socket packet pocket has an error to report!

If your cursor finds a menu item followed by a dash,
And the double-clicking icon puts your window in the trash,
And your data is corrupted ’cause the index doesn’t hash,
Then your situation’s hopeless and your system’s gonna crash!

      You can’t say this?
      What a shame sir!
      We’ll find you
      Another game sir.

If the label on the cable on the table at your house
Says the network is connected to the button on your mouse,
But your packets want to tunnel on another protocol
That’s repeatedly rejected by the printer down the hall,

And your screen is all distorted by the side effects of gauss
So your icons in the window are as wavy as a souse,
Then you may as well reboot and go out with a bang,
‘Cause as sure as I’m a poet, the sucker’s gonna hang!

When the copy of your floppy’s getting sloppy on the disk,
And the microcode instructions cause unnecessary risc,
Then you have to flash your memory and you’ll want to RAM your ROM.
Quickly turn off the computer and be sure to tell your mom!

T&tb, as someone who supports a network for a living (I must hate myself), I love your poem and I’m going to send it to all my colleagues tomorrow!

      T&TB,

      That poem was AWESOME!!!

Paperless is priceless! Saves time and energy searching caches by the click of a button you can download into the palm the cache pages and the last 5 logs!

I can’t imagine going back to printing, etc. Just like I can’t imagine going back to hand entering each waypoint! (okay – I’m pampered)

If you need the link to get step by step instructions, let me know. I don’t have it with me but I can access it, copy it, and post it for those interested.

        HELP!

We’ve downloaded what we thought we needed, and we can’t get the PDA to chat with the computer. Blah!

Do we need a CD/software that we don’t have and can’t get downloaded off the Internet?

I SO want to go paperless!
        (Carole’s cry for help)

We need to know what kind of PDA you have. If it’s a Palm or Handspring you can download from here- http://www.palmone.com/us/support/downloads/win_desktop.html

I’m a little surprised that no one mentioned using a PocketPC device on the forum.

Any way, I use GPS Sonar on a Compaq Ipaq and am very satisfied. Yet, I just use it to display cache pages for now, but I want to learn more about using it to plan my cache hunting routes, too.

Any advice on how to best use Microsoft Streets and Trips with the PocketPC for geocaching?

        Thanks!

          Morgue,
I will be watching as well. Although I have gone “Palm” for geocaching right now, I do have a Pocket PC and Streets & Trips. It would be nice to have that option as well.

I have a “new” Palm IIIxe from ebay. I have Windows XT Home Edition. I cannot get the Palm to talk to the PC. I have tried two different serial cables (the cradle and a travel cable), I have gone through all the help steps at Palm, I have tested the serial connection, I have tried removing all user processes, I have reinstalled the Palm Desktop software. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks. – Ruth

check the settings on the (antique) serial port and make sure it is on and set properly, then also do a soft reset of the palm (usually a small hole on back of palm), if I unscrew the end of my styles it has a pointer at one end to reset the unit and a Phillips screwdriver at the other, yours might also have this. if not GENTLY use a paperclip. also check that the palm is set to sync with the cable and not through a modem.

              also try http://kb.palmone.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE?New,Kb=PalmSupportKB,ts=Palm_External2001,Case=obj(2883)

              just some ideas…
