I have a question about the etrex 20. The other day downloaded The Bear Bait series in Wabeno, or I thought I downloaded them all. There is over 300 caches in the series. Then last night I downloaded 15- 18 other caches. Well I go out today and none of the ones I downloaded last night were on my GPS.
How many files does the etrax 20 hold? I was under the impression that this unit should hold something like 2000 files. I should have around 400 to 450 loaded but don’t.
I have ordered additional memory Friday. Now how much more info can be stored on a 4G?
06/14/2015 at 8:48 pm #2040553We have an eTrex 20, and missing downloads have been a recurring problem with our receiver. We think the caches are in there, the screen says “download successful”, and so on, but when we go to look for them, they are nowhere to be found on the receiver. This is really bad when we are traveling… like when we “lost” everything we had loaded for a trip to Alaska. 😕 Not too long ago we had to turn around to reload some caches when we found they weren’t on the the receiver anywhere. Lost a whole hour on that effort.
I don’t know how many caches the eTrex 20 holds, but it’s a lot. Your problem has nothing to do with memory. Contacting Garmin about this issue was useless. We have learned to check each time after loading caches to make sure that they are in the receiver… and then we double-check later… and triple-check before we head out.
06/18/2015 at 12:49 pm #2040643The eTrex 20 can in theory hold “up to” 5,000 geocaches if done right, but not 5,000 GPX files. eTrex’s have a limitation on the number of GPX files it can process. When you load geocaches one at a time, it will create a GPX file for each one. However, when you load a pocket query to the device (much better), you will be able to put in hundreds of geocaches that only use a single GPX file. As far as I know Garmin doesn’t state how many actual GPX files it can hold. Garmin does state it can take 2,000 waypoints, but waypoints (LOC files I think) are different than geocaches (GPX or GGZ files). Waypoint files only have coordinates and a name, whereas geocache files have that plus description, hints, etc. Also, I’ve “heard” that if the caches in the GPX files have a lot of content (long descriptions and log entries, etc.) it will take up more memory on the eTrex, which could affect performance. That’s more of an issue with the older eTrex models however, which didn’t have as much memory as the eTrex 20.
09/04/2015 at 9:37 pm #2042622I also have the eTrex 20, and was wondering about the 5,000 cache limit. I have several PQ’s that I normally run that have overlapping caches (i.e. the same cache being on both PQ’s), how does it count those caches? Does the eTrex recognize that it’s the same cache and count it just once, or does it count those cache once per PQ?
