I’ve had my share of GPS units. I’ve owned 9 GPSR’s so far. The first one was purchased in 1993. It was a Magellen Meridian XL. This unit was replaced 3 times under warrantee. I vowed to never own another Magellen. Each one had different problems and they were all crap.

The next (#4) was an Eagle Accunav. It was cutting edge in it’s day. Large screen, but a battery hog.

GPS #5 and #6 are Lowrance Globalmap 100’s. I liked this unit so much, I bought an extra one on Ebay for my son. This unit has an awesome antenna which has outperformed all the other GPS units I’ve seen. The screens on the GM100 are very customizable and user friendy. Major downside to this unit is the rubber keypad, which peels off if exposed to the hot son. The memory is only 2mb.

GPS #7 is a Yellow Etrex. I bought this for my youngest son to use while caching. I love the size of this unit, and simplicity of use. Down side of the yellow etrex is the poor screen resolution and lack of maps.

GPS #8 is a Garmin Legend. I really like this GPS. I carry it whenever I’m hunting. It is small enough to carry in my pocket and has great battery life. The mapping is very good, but I don’t like the method to move around on the mapping screen. The antenna is also much less sensative then my Lowrance GPSR’s. I think that bang for the buck, the Legend is a great unit.

Oh, GPS #9 is a Garmin GPS MAP76. I bought this and gave it to my Dad. It has a nice large screen and is similiar to features of the Legend. It is supposed to have a better antenna then the Etrex series.

Along with Tie, I’ve uploaded files to GPS units at every WGA event. All in all, I would have to agree that the Garmin is the easist to use when uploading, and have the least amount of problems.

My next GPS will be a Garmin. I love my Lowrance, but their lack of popularity makes it hard to find accessories. Software is much more limited for Lowrance units.

I am considering the purchase of GPS #10. I’m considering buying one with a large screen for the dash of my car. The little hand held GPS units are hard to read at a distance. I don’t know if I need to pay extra for the autorouting features.

I’m considering the Garmin 60C or 60CS. Basically the handheld units I have still do the trick in the woods. I’m now looking for a better GPS for navigating while driving in the truck.

My personal preference would be to stick with Garmin.

    Just my 2 cents.

I’ve owned a Magellan Meridian since I began caching… had it get waterlogged.. it was replaced without charge.. I’ve used this model continually until my latest trip to FL in April 04.. figured I’d take two Magellan’s down south.. so I upgraded to a Meridian Gold.. both units can have their hardware programing upgraded easily through their website as a download.. it only uses two AA batteries ( I use rechargables) and has a auto plug for use in the car.. the mapping program software can be loaded on the SD cards as well as ANY amount of waypoints stored on SD cards.. I took over 6000 geocache waypoints with me on a SD card when on my last trip knowing then that I never had to STICK to my orginal plans but could roam around as I wished in my travels.. and I had EVERY back road within each of the states east of the Mississippi River with me on my journey.. I have dropped my units so many times that I lost count.. no problems.. my older model still works great except the backlight doesn’t work.. I get great signals in any weather and have not had many problems with losing satellite lock..

I don’t think I’ll ever need another GPS because the hardware system downloads are always with new features..
