After entering the ~60 sets of coordinates submitted for the GPS Turkey Shoot contest and averaging them we have determined the winners. Drum roll please…

The best shot and winner of the Garmin Oregon GPS is im n eagl. He was a combined 15.5 feet away from the “best” coordinates for the three targets. (5.5 feet away from Tom Turkey, 2.5 feet away from Darren Deer, and 7.5 feet away from Harold Hoot Owl.)

Second place, picking up a $50 Cabela’s gift card, is CryptoCat. He was a combined 16.4 feet away from the targets, less than 1 foot farther away than the winner. (1 foot away from Tom Turkey, 12.2 feet away from Darren Deer, and 3.2 feet away from Harold Hoot Owl.)

    Rounding out the top 5:

    3rd: Team Black-Cat, 16.8 feet
    4th: OPPS5, 18.0 feet
    5th: Mrs. TBC, 19.7 feet

The attached spreadsheet shows the complete results… if you remember your entrant number, which was printed on the entry form, you can look up how you did. Another interesting thing you’ll notice if you examine the data is that folks using DeLorme GPS units took 4 out of the 5 top spots.

Thanks to everyone who showed up at the breakfast and participated in this game!

So now the question is, do they really want to use a different GPS??? 😉

It seems the model I have is consistent in it’s readings based on the places took by those with the same. There are other models that do not have consistency in numbers so it’s obviously not just the make/model that’s involved.

This activity was a lot of fun. Thanks for sharing the full stats. They are interesting.

Congrats to those who won 🙂

plus unless the coords of the critters were averaged using different units we were actually not closer or further to the critters but to the unit which took the original coords….not that it matters one way or another.

the best coords were an average of all the entries (with any major outliers omitted), so there was no unit that took the original coords so yes the coords were averaged with different units.

cool. That was the best way to get an accurate GZ. Thanks.

    Way to go Jon!

Saying that 4 of the top 5 were using Delorme isn’t quite accurate. The whole TBC crew was using the same unit and readings, but just changed one number on the coords. There were just two Delormes in the competition.

Still, having the only two Delorme’s coming out on top is interesting. I’m sure all of the Garminites will be happy to explain the insignificance of this statistical anomaly. 🙂
