I have a friend/coworker who is interested in knowing what people find to be the best car mounts for GPSr. If it matters, he has a new Colorado (much to my envy). He wondered if the bean bag type really hold the GPSr in place when the car turns corners, for instance. Or, if the kind that attach to the heater vents are strong enough to hold a Colorado.

So, we are interested in your comments about what works best for you to keep you GPSr within sight in the car.

      Thanks, Ruth

I purchased the bean bag “mount” … I set the thing on the dash and looked at it for like 5 minutes … the I decide this just doesn’t feel right.

I ended up taking it apart and finding a spot where a could bolt the non-bean base of it to my car interior without wrecking anything.

I guess if your only going to use it occasionally and/or you want to switch between multiple vehicles it might be worth a shot. But I just think that you make some sort of evasive maneuver with your car, the thing just has to move or flip. It just seems so bulky looking too.

I originally bought a Garmin windshield mount for my etrex, but found it vibrated going down the road and the only way to eliminate this was to let the bottom of the mount/unit rest on the dash.

after I got my 60Cx I noticed that the Garmin 60 series mount wasn’t much better so I looked elsewhere, and found the RAM brand mounts. They are more stable and only slightly more expensive, and they make a few different types to choose from.

This one is very similar to the one I use for my 60Cx, but is for the Garmin Colorado:

I used the bean bag base and have not had any problems until just recently. After 4 years of use, the bottom has worn a little smooth. I fixed the problem by placing a piece of the rubbery stuff you can buy to go under seat cushions to keep them from slipping, under the base. I like this base because I can just grab the whole thing with the gps still attached and stash it under the seat when I park. But of course, that is just my opinion. 😀

The only time it hasn’t remained on the dash was when it was very cold out and I went around a sharp corner just a little too fast. 😳 But I was quick enough to catch it before it hit the floor. 😆

RAM makes mounts of all types. I have a windshield mount for my GPSr that I find myself using in a lot of places other than the car. It’s a bit pricey, and WAY over built. But, it will not fall off the windshield, and it would be nearly impossible to break.

I use the bean bag mount on my Street Pilot 2720 for two years and am very happy with the system. It has yet to slide or move on the dash.
I switch between my two vehicles often.
And on our trip to Vegas we used it in the rental car. Hope this helps you out.

We used the Ram Can Mount for our Colorado. We used it on our recent road trip to California. We had the power cord and everything worked great. It will depend on where the cup holders are in the vehicle being used, but I would highly recommend it. It raises the GPS up about six inches and does not block you view out the windshield.

I bought a RAM windshield mount for my 76CS and it works great, very sturdy.

The windshield and the suction cup need to be clean, otherwise it can let go. I also had to make a small modification to the carrier so that the power cable was easier to get in/out.

Isn’t there some sort of law in Minnesota that you cannot use a suction-cup mount?

I use a bean bag mount for a Garmin Nuvi 760 with great success. The Colorado is much taller in profile – wouldn’t know about that. I used simple velcro for my GPS V before that – no problemo. (That would not work with the Colorado on top of the dash, might on a vertical surface.)
