For the first 200 caches we had been printing out cache pages for hunting caches. This required us to know where we were going and print the cache pages out ahead of time. In the last few weeks we have hit some areas where we didn’t have the pages printed out. We found we really missed the pages, i.e. Is this a multi? Is this a virtual? We tried using mobipocket and found it to be cumbersome and useless.
In search of an answer, I tried using GPX spinner. WOW!!!! PERFECT!!! The entire cache page in HTML format and sorted by name or ID. Exactly what I was looking for!
I have an old Windows CE 2.11 PDA that I don’t use anymore and it is our new ”printout”.
With the 500 nearest caches converted to HTML from GPX format they take up about 3MB. I put them on a 32MB compact flash. This way we can move them to another PDA if we want to.
I would HIGHLY recommend to anyone looking for better mobility to look at GPX spinner!

Sounds great for those of you using Palm OS® 3.0 or later!
11/05/2003 at 11:25 pm #1745875You have just scratched the surface on spinner. Change the templates to get just the stuff you want in the right places.
I would find it useful even if I didn’t own a PDA.
I’m using an old Pocket PC: Journada 548[This message has been edited by jthorson (edited 11-05-2003).]
11/05/2003 at 11:31 pm #1745876I’ve been using Spinner and Plucker with my Handspring since about my 50th find. I like it because I can sort caches by almost every way imaginable and then later do a quick “search” to find keywords, waypoints, etc.

OK, that got my attention. Can I use Spinner on my notebook computer? I don’t own a PDA.
11/06/2003 at 4:02 am #1745878Oh yes! You can have hundreds of cache pages at your fingertips via laptop, without getting back online. I keep mine with me for trips. Last time I went up north I pre-prepared 3 seperate files, 500 caches each in the southern, mid-state, and northern sections of the state. Then I could upload the section I was passing through into my Garmin on the fly. Worked great!

Yes.
1. Spinner creates output to a directory. Whether thats on a PDA or on a networked laptop or desktop, it doesn’t care.
2. Spinner allows you to massage the waypoint name to be more useful. On my GPS V, the waypoint name tells me the GC number, the type (multi vs event etc) and the difficulty.
On my GPS 12 (with 6 char waypoints) it tells me GC number and difficulty.

11/10/2003 at 3:45 pm #1745880You guys have me very interested in using Spinner on my notebook computer. I downloaded the program but I ran into a roadblock caused by my ignorance. After installing Spinner I can’t figure out how to start it. I’m using Windows XP. I go to the Start menu>All programs, but it’s not there. I re-installed it, making sure it’s installing into the Programs directory but no luck. When I open the folder for GPX Spinner on my C: drive, I find various icons for txt files and 1 KB html documents but no program file that would start Spinner. What am I missing?

1. There should be an icon on the desktop.
2. Put you GPX file in a directory.
3. Drag your GPX onto the desktop icon.
4. Take a look at spinner.gpx and the index.htm in the cache directory (these are in the directory you created in #2)There is another thread going on this under the Help topic.
Hope this helps!
