I see a whole bunch of people have posted “will attends” in the past couple of days for the WGA Gibraltar Rock CITO & Luncheon 2010, which is tommorrow.

This is a great spot, and we are very lucky to be able to have an event within this state designated State Natural Area. Gonna be a lot of fun and a lot folks at the event, so see GC2AR5D to plan your day at Gibrlatar.

A couple of notes: There are no bathrooms available, but arrangements have been made to bring in a porta-pottie. There will be a few temps to find, and there will be some great prizes. There will be a grill available to grill on. There also be coolers with water provided.

    See ya all there!!!!

Zuma meant July 31 … not July 30.

    Hi all,

Just want to let all members know that the WGA CITO at Gibraltar came off very well, and there were quite a few veteran cachers there helping with the cleanup, led by a very new cacher. The event was organized by barnumandbailey (Courtney), who is a new geocacher, and co-sponsored by the WGA. We hope to make this an annual event, probably earlier in the year though.

Here is Courtney’s log of the event that is as good of a summary as anything:

[Attended] August 3 by barnumandbailey (31 found)

Thank you to all who attended our first ever CITO event at Gibraltar Rock. The weather couldn’t have been better, the event was well attended (more than thirty volunteers!), and the park was left much better for your time and help. Having never attended a Geocaching event, I had no idea of what to expect. There were so many kind and wonderful people who came together to make this event possible. Volunteers were able to remove a truck bed full of sorted recycling and waste from the park. A special team scrubbed spray-painted graffiti from the bluff face. Other teams were dispatched to the bottom of the cliffs from both ends to haul out all of the accumulated cans, bottles, and other refuse. A number of volunteers helped out with the potluck luncheon to support the team efforts.

Thanks to Lion’s Fan Larry and 08 Rock Lady for all of their coordination efforts. As experienced geocachers, they really took the lead on making our event possible. They located the temporary caches, found lots of terrific prizes, coordinated volunteers, and even brought the grill! It was great getting to know such a wonderful couple in the process of planning this event. I couldn’t have done it without them.

Thanks also to the Wisconsin Geocaching Association and Ralph Ruok [zuma], our event sponsors. They made the day by helping to publish and promote our event. Steve Heule [cheeto] did an outstanding job with our website promotion. The WGA promoted our event and sponsored our cache prizes. I genuinely appreciate their support and involvement.

Thanks also goes out to Bill Welch, Patti Herman, and the Friends of Scenic Lodi Valley who sponsored the potluck luncheon, provided the tables, coolers, and supplies. The Friends of Scenic Lodi Valley have been an invaluable resource in where to go and how to get started. We couldn’t have organized the event without their support and encouragement. Local volunteers, like Wendy Soucie and Tim Escher, were terrific in leading the way. They were able to guide the teams safely and efficiently to the areas that needed work done.

A round of applause goes out to or Town of West Point Chair, Dean Schwarz and his wife, Marcia. Dean cleared our access to the top, delivered the collected refuse to the transfer station, and was an excellent grill master. Marcia was a great help with keeping the potluck running smoothly.

Steve Schmelzer, the Devil’s Lake Superintendent, made our day possible by providing supplies to remove the graffiti and approving our park cleanup efforts. He also arranged to have Diane Pillsbury, the Devil’s Lake Naturalist, provide a presentation for our event. Unfortunately, Diane was unable to attend this year due to family matters. We thank her for willingness to come and her interest in starting a Geocaching class up at Devil’s Lake later in the season.

Thank you for your support the Friends of Gibraltar Rock team! If you are interested in joining our ongoing efforts at this beautiful park, please contact me. If you have any suggestions on how to build on our first event’s success, your ideas are welcomed. We hope to host this event on an annual basis.
