Since I know there are shipmates and comrades in arms out there who do geocache, I thought I would start a new topic on the subject. For those that are reading this and think that your caches might be accessible, there is a rating URL that provides the HTML for your site at the following website: http://www.handicaching.com/rate.php You might want to add that HTML info to your cache as I know there are more folks then Jenni out there who would like to cache but are put off by the rating system. Try it and see what you think…of my eight caches, six are handicap accessible. 😀
05/07/2007 at 2:59 am #1874044😛 Thanks! “Old” isn’t getting any younger and he is able to less and less caching. This really helps! 200 feet he can do, but 500 feet without a bench or some place he can sit down for a bit makes it pretty much off limits for him. It gets frustrating at times when I tell him that I found some 1’s for him to find and when I park and look at the distance, he can’t do it. I urge everyone to rate their caches!
05/07/2007 at 2:40 pm #1874045I just had some discussions with another cacher about this, and how I thought the gc.com method was a bit confusing and how it seemed to lead to improper use of the attributes and rating systems.
This web page is infinitely better than the current method! I think it would be a good idea for gc.com to remove the handicapped wording on the current suggested page and use this as its replacement in conjuction with the handicapped attribute.
While you can pq on both d/t and attributes the wheelchair accessible attribute is much more useful as there are 1/1’s out there that are not wheelchair accessible but yet take so little effort for someone who is not that it doesn’t warrant a higher rating.
I applaud and thank you for putting this together. I also encourage you to take this up the chain and ask gc.com to change the current rating system to use this in conjunction with the wheelchair attribute so that there is less confusion for everyone.

05/07/2007 at 3:02 pm #1874046For those that have found this forum and would like to try out the rating system, six of the eight caches I have hidden are rated using this system. My caches are in the Madison, WI area pretty equally divided between the east side and the west side of town.
05/07/2007 at 8:27 pm #1874047After the election, I added some stuff about terrain ratings in the “Hiding a Cache” wiki. I included the handicaching info which I agree is very helpful. I wish GC.com would update their rating system as well – it is very flawed.
Two of my caches are rated there as accessible.
