I’m not sure of the exact date because we lost some forum posts during the “Great WGA Website Hack ‘n Crash of May 2003”. However, I think this week marks one year since the birth of the Wisconsin Geocaching Association. The first memberships were accepted on March 13, 2003. Prior to that the bylaws were approved by the first board of directors and the website went online.

It was just short time before that when Brian (GrouseTales), Jeremy (jvechinski), and Sam (Yawningdog) responded to my request for volunteers to help plan the first geocaching event in Wisconsin, the Aug. 2001 picnic at Pike Lake. ( http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=d17ce35f-f220-4c3b-82c8-57b0 c3ddee37 )

After that came the first campout May 17-19, 2002 at Gov. Dodge State Park. This was followed by another summer picnic on Aug. 25, 2002 at Lapham Peak State Park, a campout May 16-18, 2003 at High Cliff State, and a picnic Aug. 24, 2003 at Devil’s Lake State Park. On Jan. 14, 2003 we held the first geocaching restaurant get-together in Wisconsin at the Trysting Place in Germantown. At that meeting we encouraged other geocachers to organize their own breakfast and dinner events, and we all know how members have taken that idea by the horns.

The next big event is coming up in May: the 2004 WGA Geo Campout at Hartman Creek State Park.

We’ve come a long way in the past year, with 381 Wisconsin geocachers now registered as WGA members and 236 registered forum users.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed in their own way to this amazing pastime in Wisconsin. (raising glass) Here’s to the year ahead and to the next 10 years of progress, challenges, and friendships yet to be made in the WGA.

During that year we have trippled in size and activity. Kids should grow so fast— NOT! Congratulations to all of us.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Ken, Brian, Jeremy, Sam, and all the others who have helped create and support our association. It seems more like a big extended family, without the fighting Happy bitrhday and keep up the great work!

    Wow! Congratulations to all.
I only wish I had known about all of this long ago.
