Before GPS receivers there were maps.
Before that, there were (and still are) eyes and brains.
I did have a map while driving around Navarino and that to showed roads that didn’t exist.

What are Maps?? Oh, those are the thingy’s you load into your GPS, and they show you little squiggly things, right??
They are those pieces of paper that fill up the entire glove compartment of your vehicle, especially if you have folded them wrong.

02/28/2009 at 2:24 pm #1902868I remember another one.
Back when we first got autorouting and were still fascinated enough with it to just plug and go. We were in Chattanooga and decided our next location to visit would be Cade’s Cove in Smoky Mountain National Park. So, I did a search for Cade’s Cove, and did “goto-follow road” and off we went with a little too much faith in our new technology.
As we approached the park from the southwest corner we were ready to turn into the park proper as the little machine beeped a left-hand turn. But there, in front of us, were wooden road blocks with signs that said something like “Seasonal Road open only May- October”. And it was March. Dang.
It was hours to go all the way around. But we did get the chance to drive the “Dragon” so it worked out that we got to experience something we would have missed out on.
Paper maps? Wow. We had some of those a while back but every time we unfolded ’em the batteries fell out… ❓
02/28/2009 at 3:01 pm #1902869When I first got my 60Csx and I went to South Carolina for work I was so excited that I wasn’t going to get lost this time…….
All was fine as it routed me where ever I wanted to go that week. I had a lot of confidence in the unit. So it was time to head to the Charlotte airport. I Searched out airports int he unit and found it, goto that whole routine. When I drove up tot eh airport I thought to myself this does not look like the airport I flew into. As I got closer I realized that I came into the back side of the airport where all the cargo planes were getting loaded etc. Awe crap? How do I get to the right part? Luckily I headed out early enough to find a great little Greek restaurant back there and have lunch and ask for directions.(ya that is against the guy code but I don’t like being lost.) I did get there with plenty of time but it was a bit nervracking at the time.
