I really need your help. We are leaving early Monday morning for our camping trip, and just received a phone call from Rocky Arbor State Park in Wisconsin Dells telling us the park is CLOSED due to an infestation of Gypsy Moths. So, leaving in three days, we now have nowhere to camp. They told us they would make room for us at Mirror Lake. NO THANKS!
This trip was all about getting away from people and enjoying quiet. Not hundreds of kids and drunks running through our campsite. We’ll save that fro next years trip to Indy.
So, can anyone tell me of a little known campsite near the dells I could book? All we care about for ammenities is showers.
PLEASE HELP US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
06/15/2007 at 1:43 am #1875989I’ve heard good things about Bluemound State Park, Governor Dodge (a former Geo-campout was there), Mirror Lake and Buckhorn. All are big campgrounds so not really private, but probably not so different than Rocky Arbor.
06/15/2007 at 1:58 am #1875990A friend of mine spends the whole summer in her trailer just North of the Dells at Yukon Trails in Lyndon Station. You might want to try there. It’s a nice little place and it does have showers. Here is a link to it…
06/15/2007 at 12:18 pm #1875991Closer to the Devil’s Lake-Natural Bridge-Dells area is White Mound County Park, located on Hwy 23 between Reedsburg and Spring Green. It’s a beautiful little park (1100 acres) with a nice campground (70 campsites), nice lake for fishing, trails, and at least one geocache (Jewel by the Lake) to hunt. Phone# 608-546-5011
06/15/2007 at 2:22 pm #1875992If you don’t have to be near the Dells but want peace and quiet, I suggest Yellowstone Lake State Park near Blanchardville. We are going there this weekend and it is a FABULOUS park. Very quiet and NO MOSQUITOES! They have a huge bat population so we don’t even have to pack the bug spray.
Also, they always seem to have sites available for reservation and actually have quite a few that are non-reservable.
Good luck! Hope you find a spot to stay!

06/15/2007 at 2:57 pm #1875993Thanks HotDogs Off Trail! White Mounds is just what we’re looking for. Q U I E T! I talked to the ranger this morning, and he told me all about the park. All I really heard was empty, quiet, and no mini-golf. 😀 This is our kind of park. I uplaoded your cache to do while we are there. I may have to leave one there of our own.
I have a couple of questions about the area I’ll PM to you shortly.
06/15/2007 at 7:20 pm #1875994Buckhorn State Park has a bunch of secluded sites that you have to hike to. However, they give you a large-wheeled cart so you can pack coolers, etc… You really get away from it all and you have your own beach. Something to consider.
06/18/2007 at 5:54 pm #1875995The pictures of Rocky Arbor shows some of the devastation.

06/18/2007 at 11:02 pm #1875996Maybe instead of just pulling garlic mustard. We can cut out the branches with the nests in them at the next campout and fry them in a bon fire.

Is the campout food budget really THAT small?

Doing everything we can to keep this a dues-free organization! 😆 😉 🙄
06/22/2007 at 2:04 am #1875999We’re back. A few days early due to car trouble, but we had a great trip. We stopped by Rocky Arbor while in the area, and although we could not get in the park, we could see some damage right near the gates.
Funny thing though. We didn’t stay at Mirror lake, but we did do a few caches there (gotta get around to logging those). They didn’t seem to concerned about this park, as far as the Gypsy Moths go. Everywhere we went, we saw the eggs in cocoons. They were literally everywhere we looked, but they didn’t close Mirror Lake State Park. Other than the park district needing the revenue, can anyone tell me a good reason why they don’t close Mirror Lake?
06/23/2007 at 2:15 pm #1876000Why not ask the park ranger or naturalist instead of opening such a question for speculation here?
🙄
06/23/2007 at 5:09 pm #1876001Quite a few people mistake tent caterpillars for gypsy moths. http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/fid/may02/feature.html
07/10/2007 at 8:01 pm #1876002hmmmm…we may have to check out White Mound for some camping next year….sounds like a nice place. GOJeepers, We were at Yellowstone last year for camping and your exactly right, skeeters are nearly impossible to find…not that I look for them… 😀 There was a cache we did that involved an old sandstone root cellar….quite the find in the middle of the woods….you’d never know it was there otherwise…not sure if that one is still active or not…a while back I think the owner was looking for someone to adopt it.
