HELP!!! Garmin eTrex Legend H

My other GPS is dying and I need a backup on an upcoming trip to Texas. Does anyone have experience loading caches on to one. Garmin support says I need to do it one at a time?!?!?

I am used to a Megellan, so I have ZERO experience with Garmin. I have GSAK, I have that all. Just can’t get it to work right.

Please Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you have Mapsource and the USB cable that allows transfers from the computer to the unit?

I see that the geocaches are on the map. But they are NOT under “Find”-“Geocaches” OR “Find”-“Waypoints”

I don’t have MapSource…I don’t think.

Can’t I just make a Pocket Q and download it through GSAK or EasyGPS or Something!??!

There are maps on the GPS…and I do have the USB cord.

The only way I do it is by exporting a GSAK file to Mapsource and then uploading to the GPS. I haven’t really tried any of the other ways

I think there is a way to do it through GSAK I just found but I don’t have my GPS with me and I’m about to go to class.

Hmmmm….ok. So you have to BUY a Garmin program to put geocaches onto a Garmin product that allows you to find geocaches. That is shady.

Another reason I AVOID Garmin!!

Have you tried Easy GPS?

But, if you can see the waypoints on the GPS map but cannot “find” any of them, you may not be looking in quite the right place.

I’m not sure of the exact key sequence on the H, but on my Garmins there is an option to “find nearest” or “find alphabetically”, and the default is “find nearest”.

If all of your waypoints are far away, the “nearest” can come up blank. So go to find waypoints, then bring up the menu, and it should allow you to switch between “nearest” and “alphabetical”.

Maybe somebody with this exact unit could walk you through the procedure.

I think I got it.

I was trying to download caches in Texas, and the Garmin must not list them if they outside of a certain mile radius?

I try with some in Green Bay, and they showed up.

Also like that my old Megallan eXplorist let me seperate them into files.

Oh well…such is life.

Is that radius thing correct?? any Garmin owners??

Once the waypoints are in a GSAK database, click on the “GPS” pulldown at the top of the screen. Then, click on “Setup” and select “Garmin”. A list of Garmin units will appear and then select the one you have. Once that’s done, you select “Send Waypoints” under GPS and connect the unit and turn it on. We used to always export the waypoints to Mapsource and then send them from there to the GPSr, but we switched to this method since it’s easier. Hope that helps.

That is what I did. Thanks for the help.

Two questions still remain-

1) Can you seperate Geocaches into files?? For example, if I am at the Cache Ba$h and want to keep the new 50 caches from ALL of the caches in West Bend, could I do that?

2) What is the radius where it will show me caches in my Garmin? Why don’t Texas geocaches show up, and Green Bay caches do??

Right-they won’t show if the unit is set to “find nearest” On ours, (Legend CX) you can select “find by name” to make sure the Texas ones got loaded. That’s the button on the lower left.

I don’t think there is a specific radius-ours just seems to show a certain number of the closest ones. If the only ones loaded were in Texas, then some of those should show since they would be the nearest ones. We’ve never found a way to separate them into folders, although there may be one we don’t know. By the same token, once you’re in Texas, those Green Bay ones will never show up.

There is a radius though I’m not sure what it is…sorting by name rather than proximity should let you see all the caches….or simply scroll on the units map until you are in the area (Texas) and then you will zoom in and see if they are listed on your map.
