I placed some caches on a geo trail and I adopted a few. Other trail masters are thinking of pulling out of the trail due to heavy maintenance needed. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to make an event to help keep the trail up and running by helping replace logs? Thoughts?

I’m assuming these caches are published on gc.com which states

You are responsible for occasional visits to your cache to ensure it is in proper working order, especially when someone reports a problem with the cache (missing, damaged, wet, etc.), or posts a Needs Maintenance log.

Based on this my opinion would be “Probably not.”, but if a good argument was logged it may sway my opinion.

I’m also not sure if you’re talking an “official” event, or just a friendly get together. My understanding is that official events can’t be for the purpose of caching, but I’m not sure about maintenance of caches. Perhaps the reviewers can weigh in and provide some insight though.

For what it is worth, IMHO, if the others are pulling out due to heavy maintenance, they should have realized that when they initially placed them and if no one is interested in adopting these caches, the COs need to go pull them all from the field and not rely on others to maintain the caches. This would potentially open up the trail to a number of caches that may be of a more than P&G quality (multi-cache/Puzzle final perhaps). COs need not follow the lead of other “high number of caches hidden owners” who blanket their caches with “You have permission to maintain/replace my caches if you find them in need”. If they are not interested in the maintenance portion of cache ownership, they should stick to finding them.

Yes I meant a friendly get together. I am hoping that this power trail stays the same. I just don’t want to see it goto seed because of the high maintenance need.

I certainly don’t mind adding a new log sheet or bag while out caching, I keep those supplies in my caching bag. But on the other hand, CO’s really do need to maintain their caches. An event could be a fun way to do this but what about the next time the caches need maintenance?

I like the trail because it helped teachers how did you cache better. We learned a lot from it.

Maintenance has not been an issue for me with the trail. For the most part people will say that they replaced a log or a baggie or an entire container if not, logging a needs maintenance so we can go check on them. They are usually easy to find so if someone logs a needs maintenance, it usually did need it when we went to check.

My reason for not wanting the caches anymore is not maintenance, it’s that I don’t really like the idea anymore and it seems to be boring containers one right after another. That is fine for other people if that is what you like but I would rather spend my energy on more creative caches. But that’s just me.

Other trailmasters told me maintainence issues. I know next year will be bad for us due to the new arrival January.

Ah, a new arrival in January. Would that be a big screen TV for watching the Packers win the Super Bowl? 😉

      Congrats! 😀

I thought maybe they were getting a puppy

We already have a 42 in screen tv and three “puppies”. Keep guessing.

I always have at least one new write in rain log in my wallet and if I’m going to do a trail I bring my cache backpack that has many logs and containers. I feel it is seekers responsibilities to help with maintenance. It is easy. Hardinfam, I will be biking your section of the trail in the next few weeks and will fix them all up. Con grates on the new addition to your fam.
