Some time early this summer, if things go right, we’ll be hitting cache #300.
For the past two century milestones, we’ve chosen caches that were very unique in some way: #100 was “Covert Cache” with some friends. Cache #200 was in Central Park in NYC with family. So with cache #300 coming up, we’re looking to do something unique again. One thought I had was to hit one on the Military Ridge bike trail. Mrs. OuttaHand and myself just got nice new bikes and would enjoy the ride. If I could combine it with a milestone cache, then all the better.
But it may happen that #300 would land around Fathers’ Day when we’ll be in Sheboygan so something around there would be good, too.
So this topic has a two-fold purpose:
1) Does anyone have a listing of caches along the Military Ridge Bike trail? Or know how to make a query to find them?
and
2) Does anyone have other suggestions for a unique milestone cache that would be in Southeastern WI somewhere?
I’d like the cache to be memorable (in a good way!) and it should be one with a moderate terrain rating. I open the floor to suggestions. . . . .
03/30/2007 at 7:24 pm #1872333Perhaps a tough puzzle cache? I hear tell Oconomowoc may have one….or a bounty hunt…..Pirates? There are just way too many great caches around to give you one to do but looking at the COTM’s might help.
03/30/2007 at 8:42 pm #1872334Here’s my suggestion for your milestone. I realize it’s not SE Wisconsin, but the drive to this cache is Well Worth It!!

lagrac, I’m afraid that one’s a bit far away even though it does look like a nice one.
lostby7, is there a particular one you found fun? Oconomowoc isn’t too far at all.04/02/2007 at 3:58 pm #1872336If you are going to be in sheboygan and dont have it, Lottie Cooper Sails Again. Being a diver I liked this one and the find is not a difficult one but I like the area and subject.

Sorry I was just funnin’…..trying to lure you out to my neck of the woods. There are a few nice caches in the area based on themes though…aliens, pirates, wanted criminals. Picking a milestone cache is pretty hard for someone else to recommend though….. Personally I like to do milestones at friends caches or at an Earthcache / Event. I’m about to hit one too and need to come up with something that looks like fun….perhaps a puzzle cache.
One of the nicest straight up caches in the area is at Nature Hill on the North end of town…it is a multi and very well done. GCYKFD. It is a walk up and around a mighty big hill…and there is another cache on the top of the hill as well ( GCY306 ).
Oh and Nature Hill is the location of the WGA’s very first cache of the month.
04/03/2007 at 5:44 pm #1872338Not sure if it’s polite to mention your own caches … but here goes …
You could try my mystery cache GCZEEV in downtown Port Washington, WI.
My reasons:
(1) It’s fairly close to your target area.
(2) There’s a bike trail that will take you to the starting point and bikes would be a great way to travel to all the others steps, actually the best way, total travel from start to finish is about 2 miles via roads and bike trail.
(3) There are many other caches along the bike trail and surrounding areas.
(4) This cache is fairly different than most caches, yet not incredibly difficult or excessively time consuming.04/03/2007 at 7:04 pm #1872339I think everyone has made good suggestions, but I think we are all missing something. None of us know what kind of caches you really enjoy. Soooo…. How about if you post which cache you have found that was your absolute favorite? From there, we can probably make a better recommendation for some that you would enjoy. There are a lot of great caches near you, but we would need to know your preferences.
04/03/2007 at 7:07 pm #1872340Oh, and I posted a route for the Military Ridge Trail on GC.com. There are only a couple caches “on the trail” plus the virtual in Barneveld, but you could select a greater distance for your query if you don’t mind venturing off the trail into the local parks.
04/04/2007 at 1:56 pm #1872341Team DeeJay is right — you don’t know what we like!
Well, in general, we like regular or multi caches (not micros or virts) that have an actual box to find (small or regular). The place is usually more important than anything. We like to go somewhere that is worth visiting even without a cache. That’s what made #100 GC3798 (a very interesting bar/restaurant), and #200 GC4D82 (a castle in Central Park) very enjoyable. We can’t forget those places.
Here are some that are memorable to me:
GC6743 Scuppernong Springs
GC2919 Beaulah Land
GC5235 Water’s Edge (even thought it’s a Virtual)
GCHT3H Don’t Pick It, Rub It (same reason as Water’s Edge
GCMFGD Keebler Vacation Home
GCVZF2 White River Trail
GCY2V6 Meow Mix
GCY2TQ Springfield Bike TrailSo now you have an idea of what caches we’ve enjoyed. Those particulars aside, if it could include the following three things, it would be perfect. Any two of them would be great:
1) Memorable Location
2) Opportunities for picture taking (love photography)
3) Biking (we’re very new to it, but are enjoying it)The floor is once more open. Keep the good ideas coming!!!
(edit to add GC#’s to the #100 & #200 caches mentioned above.
Hey — thought of one more thing. Even though we live just 20 miles from Illinois, we don’t have a cache in that state yet! Any good ones in the flatlands?04/04/2007 at 4:39 pm #1872342OK, since I asked, here is a list, sorted by distance from Elkhorn. I didn’t check to see if you had already found any of these, but I suspect you might find something you like.
Captain and Mate’s First Tide GCVTD1
This multi will take you to a very nice wildlife area that you probably haven’t found.Beyond the Pines GC5B74
Simply an ammo box in what I think is the best unknown park in the area.Creepy Cache GCKQ43
Cache Of The Day GCJ3MP
Kettle Moraine View – Kenosha County GCQ8KJ
These three caches are all challenging multis in the New Munster Wildlife Area. Creepy Cache is probably the easiest to find, but they all feature some challenging terrain. If you try Cache of the Day, you might want to drag me along for the VERY difficult first waypoint. (At least they put the hard part first!)High Brass – General Of The Army (R) GCJ889
The finale of a 5 cache series, also located in New Munster. This series features containers of all sizes and difficulties.Mountaineering Illinois Style GC97C5
This one is in Gander Mountain County Park in Illinois. As you might guess from the name, its not flat at all. Great photo ops at the top. There is another nice cache in this area as well (Gander Lake Hollow) which is currently disabled.Snake Bite GCJ3MM
This one was a blast. It starts in an abandoned farm in Minooka Park in New Berlin/Waukesha and takes you on trip all over the southern half of the park. If you have mountain bikes you could ride the entire way with only maybe 200 feet of walking to the final.Round and Round GCXPJV
Well, you COULD ride your bike on this one, but I’m guessing you wouldn’t want to. Lots of ups and downs on this one. If you have kids with you, the bushwack to the final is a bit intense. The Lorine Niedecker Cache GCN26B
I think this one would really appeal to your sense of place. Be sure to vist the bonus cache as well to get the whole experience.Big Mac Daddy GCK44D
This is in MacDonald Woods in Illinois. Just an ammo box in the woods, but getting there is quite the journey. The Combination at Ross Lodge GCQA5B
This one is a lot of fun in an area of Milwaukee County that most folks won’t ever see. Maybe a bit too tough to use as a milestone cache.Along the Milky Way GCQW6J
This is the finale of a 5 cache series along the Root River in Franklin. While the final is easy, getting the parts to find this are quite the challenge. This one you can ride your bikes for most of it on a paved trail, but you would want to bring locks as you will need to leave your bikes (or walk them on inhospitable terrain) for extended periods. Again, this might be tougher than you are looking for. This series is very memorable for me, as I stepped on a sleeping fawn while looking for one of the component caches. Don’t know which of us was more shocked. The Petrified Cache GC4CC8
This multi is what I like to call a surprise cache. You start out finding easy waypoints on fairly easy terrain, then you get near the final and say to yourself “I have to go there??” LOTS of other caches in this area if you need to find #299, #298, etc.Bootlegger’s Stash GCFD22
Another cache that will appeal to your sense of place. You start at a historic site and finish in a marshy woodland.Take a look at these and see if any appeal to you.
04/04/2007 at 5:52 pm #1872343Those are some great suggestions!
The Lorine Niedecker, and the Bootlegger’s Stash both look real promising. Thank you! -
