Hi Wisconsin Cachers,
I am Gadget Girl, a TX Cacher and I work with a company out of Seattle helping with corporate team building events called http://www.geoteaming.com.
They are corporate sponsors with GC.com and listed on their homepage. We are part of the festivities for the third year in a row at camp jeep.
This year Camp Jeep is in Wisconsin at Elkhart lake.
I need 3 geocachers to help out with 5 different geoteaming events over the course of 3 days, plus there would be a pre-training day to attend. You would come on the 9th for a pretraining (2-3 hours)
then you would work with us from about 9-1:30 on the 10th, and 9-4:30 on the 11th and 12th. (times are approx)You will receive $50 per day – $200 total. and free entrance to all of the Camp Jeep festivities. http://www.jeep.com/jeep_life/events/camp_jeep/
Plus a polo shirt to wear during the events. There is a lot more info, but i don’t go on and on in the forums, it’s really fun and a little bit of work. You will be walking with a team on the course for 1.5 hours, we run 2 course per day that last 2 hours. We work out of a tent, so it’s hot. You will take about 15 pics of each team throughout the event with a digital camera we provide.
I can only accept 3 people for this! Sorry but that’s it. You must be 18. You must be experienced with a garmin yellow etrex and a pocket pc–we will train on these. you must be able to physically keep up with teams racing around to win. you must be able to participate the entire weekend. Spots will fill quickly.
Please email me off list to [email protected] and let me know why I should pick you for my team! We do this all over the world all the time, so you can see what we have done in other states from the websites.
thanks for your time!

Austin,TX08/02/2006 at 11:25 pm #1764206Had there been a notice a reasonable time in advance, I would have been available for this.
08/03/2006 at 12:12 am #1764207I would have loved to help out, but I will be in NY at that time. Sorry!
08/03/2006 at 12:30 am #1764208E-Mail sent. 😀
08/03/2006 at 12:50 am #1764209I am so sorry about the short notice. they just gave me permission to hire 3 techs today. I literally hung up the phone and posted it. They had to negotiate a price for attending jeep camp for the techs. It’s costing us $200 per person to get each of us into the event. It’s a BIG DEAL! I think it normally costs about $500 per Jeep to get in. Jeep gives away loads of cool stuff and tshirts at these events and there are prizes, etc. It is a well attended event. Even our hotel is FAR away, like 45 min or so. The city is booked, so if you don’t live close enough to commute, don’t volunteer, there is no where for you to stay. We booked our rooms over 3 months ago.
sorry,
Tanya

Bob and I are looking forward to meeting you and seeing what kind of adventure we can have with you and the rest of those involved. We love Geocaching and want to thank you for giving us the opportunity to lend a hand! It’s been a long time since we used a “Yellow” etrex, but it’s like riding a bike…right? Happy caching!

08/05/2006 at 3:19 pm #1764215Hey, check it out…Bob and I finally figured out a way to get paid for Geocaching! And hey, we don’t even have to cache! We just have to be there to support the Team! (LOL!)
08/13/2006 at 9:14 pm #1764216This last few days Commander Bob (Bob), Major Brat (Robin) and I answered the request for volunteers to help with this geocaching event held at the Elkhart lake racetrack. Bob and Robyn answered the request and saw enough to encourage me to join in. We were unsure of what we getting into but such is the nature of geocaching.
This geocaching opportunity was part of a greater event called Camp Jeep 2006. This is an annual event where Jeep vehicle owners meet with the makers of Jeep, see the new products and get lots of licensed merchandise. They can test drive new vehicles and take their own vehicles on courses to put them through their paces.
Surrounding all this were activities and games of every description. Contests, get a manicure, paint your own bobble head doll, rock climbing, scuba lessons, skate-boarding (Tony Hawk was there) all ending with a large stage show featuring the Blues Brothers. A state fair atmosphere focused on Jeeps. A new experience at many levels.
One of the activities was a geocaching course. People from a company called PlayTime, Inc where hired to set up a temporary course of caches all around Camp Jeep. Over the 3 days we participated in 5 geocaching sessions. The 5 teams in each session had about 8 members of all skill levels from no knowledge to experienced geocacher. The three of us and 2 PlayTime pros traveled with one of each of the teams. The participants were given a quick lesson on the rules and operation of the devices. Each participant got their own GPSr to use.
Then the teams were unleashed on camp Jeep for a limited amount of time, finding caches as a team with the goal of maximizing points, each cache having a point value proportional to its difficulty. The 5 guides took pictures, made sure things were done safely, rules were followed and technical questions were answered. At the end we returned to the tent to tally the scores and award prizes.
Every session brought new challenges with the new faces. But I’ve never seen such rapid transitions from neophyte to caching demons.
This is one of those experiences that you’ll always remember. The people from PlayTime were first class, professional and above all, fun people. They have friends in Wisconsin.
08/14/2006 at 2:16 pm #1764217My mom and I were lucky enough to be able to participate in the geocaching event and want to thank everyone who helped put such a wonderful event on. As soon as the call for geocachers to help went out I wanted to volunteer, but with my family already planning to attend Camp Jeep it was impossible. Thankfully, we were able to get on the waiting list and then were able to participate. I haven’t had so much fun caching is a while! The people on my team (GO WHITE TEAM!) took to caching with a vengence and we were able to do 20 caches in less than 2 hours, earning 13,000,000 points! We lost to Commander Bob’s red team, but we gave them a run for their money!
Thanks again for such a wonderful experience and come back to do some “real” caching soon!

08/14/2006 at 7:20 pm #1764218Well-said Jeff.
This was an incredible opportunity that we all had the pleasure of experiencing Having a behind the scenes look at many of the various venues within the event was a real treat as well. Introducing Geocaching to avid newbies, watching them discover the same passion we all feel for our sport, and the pride I felt as I watched my team learn to navigate, then find the hides, was an experience I won’t ever forget.Everything about Camp Jeep ’06 was truly an amazing event. I now understand what makes Jeep and Geocaching such a natural fit. Everyone we met showed us warm hospitality and made us feel welcomed right away. Our host and sponsor, and the ones responsible for making all of this happen, is Rodale Publishing, and specifically Megan and Stephanie. We even managed to take them out on their first geocache hunt during our off hours. I believe New York City will soon be seeing a couple new cachers logging finds soon. It’s through their hard work and dedication that all of this was possible. Rodale gave away 5 Garmin 60csx units, 40 backpacks filled with various goodies for the winning teams, and countless white jeeps and green jeep TB’s during the 3-day event.
The other members of the team included Donna, our Playtime staff member, who also worked tirelessly throughout the entire event. Making sure the sessions ran smoothly and safely, and insuring everyone was having a good time, was just part of her contribution to it’s success. The head of the GeoTech team, and course designer, was Tanya, aka: gadget girl, a Texas Geocacher who has a heart as big as her state. Last, but certainly not least, there was Bill, our fifth GeoTech team member. A San Diego Geocacher, retired Marine, and Jeep enthusiast in his own right. (And a pretty tough Tech to beat out on the course.) I hope the camaraderie and friendships we developed with all of them lasts as long as the memories do.
Some of my favorite memories include joining all the Techs for a splash in the shark tank after the final session was over. After spending an afternoon keeping up with the winning Red Team, including 3 girl track team stars, the water was a refreshing finish to a hot afternoon.
The grilled pizza for lunch, a definite taste treat for the hungry Geo Tech on the go.
Watching an 8-year-old girl showing her grandfather how to input a Go-To.
Seeing a 50something man climbing a rock tower, (for the team), then later volunteering to jump into the shark tank, (again for the team), the whole time being cheered on by his wife.
All the other Camp Jeep staff members, who became involved in the games, either thru association, location, or enthusiasm. All in all, this was a great opportunity to introduce Geocaching to a wide range of people, and we had a wonderful time. I believe Wisconsin, Wisconsin Geocaching , and the WGA was well represented by our team of Techs.
Now if only Jeep would send me the new Commander vehicle, after all…it’s named after me, isn’t it? 😉
