I see recently there was a cache hidden in our area that also had a trail cam installed in the area of the cache by the CO. No mention was made on the cache description page of this.

What are your thoughts on this not being disclosed on the cache description page and someone hiding a trail cam by their cache to spy on it? I am assuming there is one of two reasons for this. A) to try and see who isn’t logging DNF’s and/or B) just to sit and watch people search for the cache

    Here is the cache. http://coord.info/GC432RY

    HMMM? That’s interesting.

Depending on who’s property this is on it may be legal / illegal. The WI DNR has specific requirements for cameras placed on their land including a nameplate visible without touching the camera. In certain municipalities a trail cam is illegal all together. Private property would present a whole different set of options.

Like an ammo box though, I wouldn’t be surprised to see this going missing considering it’s location is known.

Looks like it is located in a city park, so unless the city has a law about trail cams I don’t think it would be illegal. As to the ethics of it, I guess that depends on what the CO does with the pictures from the cam. If they are just for his amusement/curiosity I don’t see a problem with it. If he plans to post them on the cache page, or elsewhere, then I think that he should state so on the cache page.

All opinions, comments, and useless drivel I post are mine alone and do not reflect the opinions of the WGA BOD.

Be interesting to know what type of “gesture” the FTF made at the camera…

Maybe this is an attempt to further protect the ammo can from muggles.

Like some of us who have lost ammo cans to thieves, maybe the CO has too and would like to find out who the culprits are :bartrod:

Ever ask the CO himself what his intentions are? That would clear things up rather than speculate about it.

My own personal opinion is that it should be stated on the cache page that there is a hidden trail cam

The container is not an ammo can. It is listed as a small, and you can tell by the logs that it is not an ammo can.

Maybe the trail cam has nothing to do with the cache or the CO. Maybe it’s not even there anymore. Have you checked it out to see if it’s pointing right at GZ or if it’s pointing where an animal may be coming down the trail instead? If you see it, have fun with it and make some funny faces for the record. (Gestures might not be the best thing.) I say go for the cache and see for yourself.

I don’t see what the big deal is? And maybe it’s not even his.

          #1966433

The trail cam is his, and he has admitted to it being camo’d better than the cache. He admitted it was his on the Coulee Cachers facebook page. He has not disclaimed why he has it placed there though.

I read awhile somewhere, In think it was England, that a bunch of cachers set up a high tech sting to catch a guy who was stealing TB’s and coins. They caught on a pretty clever hidden camera set up. They turned it in to the police but they said they couldn’t do anything. So they found who the guy was and confronted him with the photos. He returned over 100 TB’s or something like that. The camera can’t hidden to well, if someone saw it with out trying.

In the age of “social media” these photos could end up anywhere and no “consent” is required. Making a funny face or other gesture for the camera could be twisted in all kinds of interesting ways that may be blatantly out of context, but good luck trying to stop it (speaking from first hand experience with a photo attack against our church / school by a member).

I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see this camera go missing. People steal ammo boxes because they have retail value. The most basic trail cam is worth a small stack of ammo cans, so …

What’s the big deal? If you know it is there and have something to hide then don’t look for the cache. I ignore all caches from that CO anyways because of all the drama. Cams and door locks just keep a honest man honest.
