Just an observation…I have seen a few caches which have as a hint, “see the Attributes.” With more and more people going paperless, very often the attributes are not included on the GPS unit.
For example, Garmin Oregons do not include any attributes…every time I hunt for a cache it is without knowing any of the attributes (which is another excuse I can now use for DNFing a cache).
Just a thought for folks adding hints, know that some (and more all the time) will not be able to see the attributes you place on the page.

05/19/2010 at 1:53 pm #1929354We’ve seen a few caches where attibutes/symbols are included in the description. It takes extra effort, but it’s becoming increasingly more than just a nice touch, it seems.
Here’s an example of attributes that can be generated and incorporated into your html code – it looks quite easy if you’re writing at that level. It’s from that crazy guy in Texas, 9key: http://www.9key.com/selector.asp
Our favorite to see in January is “Check Tide Before Caching”, cuz it has a pretty icon, and it usually means caching in warm weather and water.

🙂

That must have just happened, my PQ’s from last week had attributes and the one I ran yesterday didnt.

🙂If I follow the history and connect the dots properly, I believe this was the “inspiration” for the attribute functionality Groundspeak added to cache pages.
05/19/2010 at 5:37 pm #1929358Before the recent change with PQs was one able to get the attributes on an Oregon running it through GSAK first? I have to admit that having attributes is a handy thing and something I miss…

That would be for the s|s PUC-series of caches!
PUC = Parent Unfriendly Cache……… 😈 😈 😈 😈05/20/2010 at 10:56 pm #1929360After some correspondence with Groundspeak, here is what happened. During the last site update, they added another entry at the bottom of your Account Details, called “GPX version”. If you want the attributes, you change this to 1.0.1. If you don’t, you leave it at 1.0. Apparently they reset everyone to 1.0 when they added the setting.
To get to this setting,
1. Log on to gc.com.
2. Hit the “Your Profile” button on the upper left.
3. Scroll down and hit the View your Account Details on the lower right.
4. Scroll to the bottom where you will see a box labeled “Your Preferences”. Click the change button in the upper right part of the box.
5. Go to the bottom to find the GPX version setting. Set it as you like, then hit the Save Changes button. All your FUTURE pocket queries will use the selected version. Note that this does not apply to any PQs already generated and ready for download.

No, the Oregon did not display the attributes. But I can see where it could be easily implemented, like the many other enhancements Garmin added after it was introduced.

Maybe it’s time to bug Garmin to get this update made….
05/21/2010 at 3:27 pm #1929364Actually, the easiest approach is probably to make a macro to add the attributes in a log, which can be included in the GPX download. I was looking at this this morning. Doesn’t look too tough to achieve. You could also theoretically add them to the cache description, but that would require that you lock the cache after adding to prevent reloads from erasing them.
