Well…. I had my first attempt at a Historical Earthcache published – Drumlin Mounds Sacred Grounds, in Dodge Co. I had a number of challenges, but with help, I overcame them. I have had questions from other cachers, asking how some EC’s can be considered a true Earthcache.
The question arose after a visit to one of LB7’s Lime Kiln Caches. I was asked what a lime kiln had to do with anything. My answer was simple….where did they get the “Stuff” to put INTO the kilns??? I got a “Hmmm…makes sense. Guess you’re right.” as an answer back. 🙂
With the Mounds, I had a lot of trouble since they are more Archeological than geological. So…. with much research and lots of questions to the Parks manager, I was finally able to get the twist I needed. So….if anyone has a historical EC they are thinking about doing. toss the idea by me and I can help decrease the headaches. LOL
I love to incorporate history in my Earthcaches wherever possible and I loved doing your WSQ Drumlin Mounds Sacred Grounds EC. It was very well done.
As to my Lime Kiln caches…there is an emphasis on history yes but also a wealth of information about the rock that is processed there and its uses as well as in some cases information about the areas specific geology (such as the Niagara Escarpment). I have to wonder how someone can’t see the EC worthiness of one of those caches? The ones at Grafton and High Cliff have loads of geological information.

I think the cache was just viewed differently…..seen as just the Kiln itself and not all the OTHER geological stuff that goes with it. And that happens. We did one or two in Indiana that got us wondering. The kilns are much like GCP4W3 – Lilydale Park Brickyard – Earthcache.
King Boreas emphasized the fossils and hunting done here and NOT the ovens and brick making, which would have added a great history lesson to this EC. It was neat to visit and we did get to see a few fossils, but I had great interest in the ovens and storage caves (Not sure what they really call them). Maybe he’ll update that one someday.
PS Thanks for the complement on the Mounds EC. Just wish I could have gotten the picture uploading to work. NOW… if I want them added, I ahve to put the whole thing in html coding.
