Horicon Marsh suggestions needed

We’re thinking about taking some friends that are new to WI to Horicon Marsh … most likely mid-April. So some questions:

(1) Are dogs allowed on the Marsh land and viewing areas?

(2) Is mid-April an Ok time to go (is there bird activity then already)?

(3) And of course, what caches are “must do” in the area? Our friends are good with rough terrain (the couple are X-National Park Rangers from Yosemite).

I don’t have a linky, but there’s a nice auto tour cache that goes all the way around counter-clockwise making several stops. You can cache your way around and complete this one after.

Not being dog owners I can’t help you on that point, but the bird activity should definitely be up.

Enjoy! It really is a pretty area. The only caveat I can think of, and I don’t think it’ll be all that important that time of year is wild parsnip. I’ve been blistered by it at least three times on visits to the Horicon. You’d think I’d learn… 🙄

I was in the Waupun area last weekend and the Geese were definitely showing up. All over the place.

There are very few caches in the Horicon Marsh proper, however, there are several caches in the nearby Ledge County park, that are in a very scenic area, higher than the marsh, and a good contrast. The oldest one is a virtual in a great area near the escarpment: GC6269

I also enjoyed the nearby Indian Mounds, which are better preserved than most mounds in the state: GCPM7C

And here is an easy drive up, on the edge of the Horicon Marsh, in a scenic area, but not in the marsh proper: GCG9XA

The Marshman’s Cache,GC336B no dogs allowed. when i did it last august, the views on both sides of the ridge were great.

The wife and I did this one already … in fact it was I believe the first cache we ever did. For our wedding anniversary we stayed at a B&B in Horicon a couple years back … we a printed out a couple cache pages and decided to give it a try … hooked ever since. That was in pre-Dog days and was the last time we were in Horicon, so we didn’t pay attention to dog signs back then. But thanks, that was a nice cache and great views.

Working from memory here and it’s not very good. I visited the marsh several years ago and for some reason (GC9E82) Bud Cook Bonanza by GeoVet stands out in my memory.

Dogs are allowed on a leash and there is a wide variety of birds that may be seen here.
