It’s kind of embarrassing, but I first saw an article about it on a Hacker web site. I was looking for a software crack or something back in September 2001. 😳
In my case, I learned about geocaching from my neighbor, Dick. I use to walk thru his back yard to access a nearby public woods on a frequent basis with my dog. I noticed a place in the woods that often had tracks going to in the snow, that made no sense. I couldnt figure out why people kept walking to a particular part of the woods, and only there during the winter.
I mentioned it to Dick, and he told me it was geocachers. He had a gps unit, and showed me how it works. That place in the snow, was then the first cache that I found, though not the first that I logged, since it was part of a multi without a log book, and a fairly difficult cache, courtesy of the Bobcat.
Unfortunately, Dick died shortly after that, but he lives on in our memories. Bobcat and Dick’s wife Carol put out a great cache in memory of Dick, that is one of my favorites, right where I use to walk across his land. That cache page can be seen by clicking here:
