Val and I like to travel to events, we used to go to southern Illinois for a Halloween event but the cache owner is not holding one this year there. So we searched and decided to head to Iowa this year, How far would you go? According to google this one is between 450 and 500 depending on our route.

I’ve gone to Tennessee and Ohio for events and went to one in Nebraska just because I was there on business when the event was held. I just missed one in Hawaii a few years ago.

The furthest that we have gone so far is 200 miles and none out of state. Going further would probably require more than one day and it would depend on what other attractions might be in the area. The longer that you geocache the game changes for you and going further than we have is probably one of the next steps. For us going further would also be influenced by others going that we may know or would want to meet.

On several occasions I have taken a day trip to Iowa or Minnesota from central Wisconsin to cache. Another day trip was hitting caches in WI, MN, IA, and IL before returning home. So needless to say I would easily travel a long distance to attend an event if I thought it sounded worth it. We have also turned a trip or two into an overnighter, which it sounds like your Iowa trip would certainly be.

The next “far” event that I am eyeing up is MOGA, which will be an entire weekend tied up.

We’ve been to Geobash in Indiana and Ohio. I looked for events when I was in Hawaii and Newfoundland for other things, but there weren’t any. I went to an event in the Northwest Angle of Minnesota over Labor Day weekend, and that’s a lot further than one would think. 405.6 miles as the crow flies.

It’s become more difficult the past year or so for us to just drop things and go somewhere overnight, so that factors in for us as well.

I believe grcarlson has been to an event in every state except Alaska.

I’m not one to travel far for events. I think the furthest I’ve traveled was to Presque Isle in Marquette, which is 2 hours for me.

Mega Events are not my cup of tea so I always avoid events like the West Bend Cache Bash. I would rather go to the small events with like 20-30 cachers attending.

Because I live near Lake Michigan, I often get notifications of events located like 200 miles across the lake, but it would take more than 6 hours to get there as I would drive up in the UP then down the LP. No thanks.

One of the highlights of my trip to London and Wales, was a stop in Oxford for an event. See GCV8XV.

It was in an old grass roofed tavern along the River Thames. The tavern claims to date back to the 13th century. Pretty cool place, and I camped overnight with about 60 British cachers. There is an age old path along the Thames called the “Thames Path,” which is pretty amazing when you consider how old it is.

The other cool thing about attending that event in Oxford, my daughter and I found a series of caches along the canals of the University of Oxford, using wooden boats propelled by long sticks, an English thing known as punting. I think we found 3 of the punting caches. See GCK42P for details, if interested.

There a pic of me and my daughter Rachel (Ninja Carrot) there. Here is one with Rachel in the foreground, and other cachers punting in the background:

08rocklady and I attended GC21GXZ, First Light 2010 while on vacation. This was a pre-dawn gathering to witness the first sunrise of 2010 on Satellite Beach, FL. The heavy rain stopped briefly at dawn but you had to sort of imagine the sunrise because of the clouds. Still, it was fun and we met a bunch of local cachers.
