This past weekend I went ahead and submitted an Earthcache I’d been thinking about.
A day after submission, I got an e-mail from the approver at earthcache.org with a concern. I promptly responded to that.
The next day I received an e-mail that they had done their part to approve that EarthCache and were going to pass it on to the GC.com approver.
From that point I’ve heard nothing. There is a spot in the “My Account” area at GC.com where you are supposed to be able to view caches awaiting approval. For me it reads “None in queue”.Any thoughts on how long it takes for the earthcache.org people to get the info to a local approver? And from there, how long for the approver to take care of this (relatively) new type of cache?
(you know how it is — brand new cache placement = little kid’s excitement at X-mas)06/15/2005 at 2:32 pm #1749733I guess I wasn’t keeping up with the times, but I never heard of an “Earth Cache” until I saw one submitted for approval a few weeks ago.
This is what the guidelines state regarding Earth Caches:
quote:
This is a unique but limited cache type. An Earthcache is an educational virtual cache or physical site that people can visit to view a unique geoscience feature on-the-ground.All Earthcaches must be submitted and approved through the Geological Society of America. The Earthcache submittal forum and Guidelines may be found on the Earthcache.org site. http://www.earthcache.org/
There isn’t an “Earth Cache” field in the drop down box for cache type. This means you need to make it a virtual cache. It would then get submitted to be reviewed. Since you local admin’s (wga and wga2) cannot approve these types of caches, we need to forwarded it to Nate to review. It sounds like he needs to get the OK from the Geological Society that it meets their criteria.
Approval of these is completely out of our local hands. Quite frankly, I’m not sure how many Wisconsin land features would meet the Geological society’s requirements for “unique”. Wisconsin has plenty of land features, but I don’t know how many are so unique they deserve the title.

06/15/2005 at 3:34 pm #1749734Mine took maybe a few days to get approved from the EarthCache people, then it took maybe 5 days or so to get converted to the GeoCaching site.

Getting approval from the Geological Society does NOT magically create the http://www.Geocaching.com entry … you still need to create one for approval, like any other geocache … the difference is what happens NEXT, per Grousetales. So, if I’m understanding things correctly, the “hold up” is currently you, since you need to create the listing.

The info on this from the Groundspeak folks has been sketchy at best. Maybe I can shed a little light on the situation….
I THINK this is how it works…..
You submit a cache to http://www.earthcache.orgThe folks there then submit it as a virtual cache on your behalf. (I’ve seen these show up in the queue, and they are always submitted by the same person who is located many hundreds of miles away from here).
Then Nate at groundspeak “converts” the cache into an earthcache. I believe at that time, the ownership is changed back to the original submitter.
Clear as mud?

06/15/2005 at 7:30 pm #1749740Good news! There was no notification that it had been OK’d until I got the first e-mail from the first finder!
So it is now approved and is fine. So the earthcache.org people DID send it on to GC.com and it was approved as an earthcache.
If you’re a member, you can do a pocket query on earthcaches. Or just check your local listings and look for a cache type icon that looks like the earth with a chunk missing.
uh – huh. I REALLY should read ALL the posts before following up. As was mentioned by the last couple posters — it is approved. Oh well. I guess I just like being redundant.
