just a little follow-up. after one month i resent my paperwork to milw county for cache placement approval and now a week has gone by and still no reply. this is very disheartening.

Did you see the post by DeeJay about a temporary person to send it to?

Which is why I have stopped placing caches in these parks and will be archieving all mine in the parks once the form for existing caches is required. Nothing worse than the Milwaukee County government.

This is a fine example of why mandatory reporting schemes with parks and rec officials are a bad idea. Voluntary permission is far better, and will lead to a lot less problems than when ya start dealing with a bunch of beauracrats who just want an easy desk job, without really accomplishing anything much of value.

Really, what value do the taxpayers receive from paying an employee to track geocaches in public parks? None, that I can see.

The only ones who benefit are the park and rec beauracrats, who can use the excuse of the extra work of tracking geocaches to inflate their budgets.

Thank goodness none of the parks around here have gotten this silly notion. I just hope it stays in the Milwaukee area.

So Zuma, I take it that I am then ..

“ya start dealing with a bunch of beauracrats who just want an easy desk job, without really accomplishing anything much of value.”

      Which tells me that
      – hiring & training & hiring local young adults to teach children how to swim, to lead a supervised and safe playground sites, learn baseball, etc has no value?

No answer necessary, just keep in mind that I am one of those Park & Rec people and there are others who are WGA members.

Do I think every department needs a formal policy? No. Do I think geocachers need to develop a working relationship with their Parks staff? Definitely.

      Hey Auntie Nae,

No offense intended, but I think you are missing the point.

The point is that it is foolish for Park are Rec departments to promulagate policies that mandate tracking of geocache policies, and it is foolish of geocachers in general to think that having beauracrats involved in our game is a good thing. It is not a good thing, and all the problems in Milwaukee County were quite predictable.

Certainly you agree that a Parks department that cannot even maintain clean toliets in their parks has no business in meddling in where geocachers play their game, anymore than they have in meddling with who plays frisbee in the park.

In healthcare, we use and practice triage. Triage is a French word that means “to sort,” and it basically means that you do the important stuff first, the things that make a difference. Triage is important because not everything that can be done, should be done. And even some of the things that would be marginally helpful, cannot be done because of limits on resources.

Taxpayers can only support so much, and cities have to triage and sort what is funded and what is not funded. The idea of actually paying someone in a Parks and Rec program to keep track of where geocaches are located is one of those things that can be done, but should it be done? Arent Milwaukee property taxes already high enough without paying someone to keep track of data that doesnt really benefit the community? And once the city realizes that they are paying someone to track data that really doesnt need to be tracked in the first place, how long until they try to capture those costs in user fees, and start charging for the placement of geocaches?

So, I mean no offense to Parks and Rec folks. I however do find it quite objectionable that some Parks and Rec folks think it is useful to spend taxpayer money foolishly and in a way that in the end benefits no one except their own budget, and may result eventually in geocache user fees.
