I have to applaud all of you that can do so many caches in a day. We have tried to do more than three and can never seem to make it. I’ve noticed many do about 10 in a day… How do you do it?? I have to applaud all of you in doing that!

      Organization….

For each day’s activity, we put together a list of caches we would like to visit. Then we plot them on a map and plan our route accordingly.

We head out to the first cache and then come to the realization that we left the map at home. So we let the GPS tell us what is the closest from there.

You decide what you are comfortable with. We will visit 1 to 12 caches in a day but would prefer to stay at about 4-6. more than that starts to take the fun out of the sport.

Keep on caching, and keep it fun.

I don;t think I do anything special. I usually generate a GPX file about three times a week. Use Spinner to make html files and rename the caches from hexidecimal numbers to abbreviated names. Then I load the revised gpx file into mapsource. Somtimes into expertGPS if I need to check out topography or other maps. I load the file into the pda using plucker as well as Cachemate 2.0. Cachemate allows me to edit caches and make notes. Sometimes I print out a map of the closest caches within a set distance. I go to the neaerst cache. Then use the GPS generally pick out the next closest cache, etc. Before going to each cache, I check out the information on the pda. If the cache has not been found a couple of times in a row, I sometimes skip it, depending on the information. Without the PDA I would have to make way to many hard copies. I guess I have way to much time on my hands……

Just reread my own post….way too much information! This is a game. Do what you are comfortable with. It’s not the total that is done by the end of the day. It’s the fun you had and the new places you have seen.

We have some days when we have done up to 15 caches but not to often. Sometimes its fun just to get out and do this and nothing else for the day. Lately we have been doing one a day just to keep in the groove. We load them into the GPS and go from one to which ever it says is the next closest. You have to have fun doing it.

I have also heard of a few groups that did 50 in just a couple of days. Can you imagine what their state of mind was then?

        Sorry, couldn’t resist.

We have fun doing it… unless it is a stinker of a day and you go to a few caches and never find any of them. I find when you get some sleep, some food, and new bearings you can head out the next day and find it…. sometimes it takes a little begging to the owner of the cache also!

But, I mean physically… Sheesh… bushwhacking on some of these really can take alot out of ya! And we go with our dog alot of the time and the heat gets to her or you have to take more water for her. I try to find some easy ones, but then feel like I am taking the easy road and need more “adventure”. Then I think… am I wasting my weekend… so much to be done at home… like cooking, cleaning, washing… yuck! Would rather be GeoCaching!! (RPaske… you crack me up! You remind me of my husband and too many electronic gadgets to play with!)

Guess I just have to hang in there and some day I can hack it like the rest of youse. BTW… anyone lose weight caching? I have been trying to use the hiking to caches as a way of exercise… seems to work.

I was lucky enough to team up with BruceS when out doing city caches the last month or so and we did 50 one day without a problem.. most city caches don’t have the long bushwhacking or such drawn out ordeals (grins) and being with someone else of my same energy level was a riot but not something I’d do often.. my normal caching day is 20+ with hundreds of miles involved to get to them.

As for losing weight.. when I’m out on my caching trips I have to watch my weight alot.. with hiking up to 12 miles per day for a few weeks at a pop can tumble my weight drastically.. but it’s great to get back home and eat all the Ben and Jerry’s I can to regain.. so yes.. it’s a great way to lose weight for me when I’m out and about. When I was in my Florida trip last winter I dropped 17 pounds by the time I came home. I usually take 3 different waist sizes of pants with me so that I know when I begin to lose too much weight while on my travels.

The most I’ve done in a day was seven with my dad (Tuck-A-Way) in Sheboygan. We started the morning around 8am and did four of the caches at a leisurely pce. Around noon, we picked up my wife and my mom and broke for lunch out. After lunch, they joined us for the last three of the day — again, at a very leisurely pace. That was plenty for us. I guess I’m in agreement with someone above. I don’t have the desire to knock off more than maybe ten. Beyond that, I’m getting way too tired to really enjoy it.
