Winter caching is the best. Nobody in the parks and no leaves on the trees.

Ya but you can’t get your bike out though, right?

Oh yes I can. I did it a few times last year in the below zero weather. Maybe I had to carry it a few times but I still rode it.

I have many times. January/February is a great time to venture out onto the ice of Dead Horse Bay, to cross over to the Lighthouse caches near Green Bay. It must have been 30 below windchill the yr we went, but at least I KNEW the ice was frozen. 12 inches to be exact (per the ice fishermen)

Question: What’s the best footwear to use in the cold when going out in areas that could be marshy with unknown water depths?

Last winter we had our regular boots on for the deep snow and for warmth, but a couple of times we were near running water and ended up walking through some squishy stuff that would not have been too pleasant to go in too deep on.

We take along aqua shoes in the warmer weather if we are expecting water or muck encounters, but that’s too cold now.

I just wear my Gortex hiking boots.

In the middle of winter I just wear what I call my pac boots like sorrels. I have a lighter pair of coumbias I wear when I snow show. I have been looking at a pair of insulated knee high rubber boots. I know a lot of guys that use them deer & duck hunting. And I ALWAYS carry at least a pair of dry socks, one heavy wool, the other cotten.

We love winter caching! We are winter people, so we take on caches that are harder in the summer—like Eagle Source near Timberline Echoes—with snowshoes. Some allow us to cross country ski. Otherwise, we’re hiking, carefully, but we don’t ease up on terrain much. I’m more likely to have my hiking stick along. We carry our “secret winter caching tool,” a shovel. Last winter began to wear thin, as we got tired after awhile of chipping everthing out of the half inch layer of ice coating most ground hides before we got any real snow, but we were still out.

The best part for Trekkin’? No Lyme disease risks! 😉

I found a pair of “farmer boots” at Farm and Fleet. Basically they were about 18 inches high, steel toed rubber boots. They were awesome and totally waterproof. I could easily walk through a foot of water without issue.

We wear gators over our boots to keep snow from getting in. They add an extra layer of protection and keep some of those burrs at bay. An investment worth every penny.

I swear by the SmartWool hiking socks, with regular ragg wool socks over those inside my sorels, ONLY if it’s terribly cold. Otherwise, just the smart wool hikers. They aren’t cheap, but they are knit in such a way that they NEVER create annoying foot wedgies by riding down in the boot.
I use them all year, unless it’s warm enough for the Keens. They wear like iron, too.

We’ve been out in weather as low as 25 below, WITHOUT the wind. A good bank robbers hat is good for those conditions.

We love caching in the winter. We want to go to Colorado and dig through the deep snow.

Today I finally had some time to catch up on some of the water caches in the area. Since we don’t own a boat we figured this was the best time, It was a bit cold on the way to the cache, but my didn’t get wet.

I put on the proper gear for a water cache and headed out

Here is a picture of my adventure

Can you say SHRINKAGE! We love caching in the winter. No bugs, less weeds and less muggles.
