Good catch, T&tB!
When I hid my first geocache “Balance Beam Creek”, I think I had only been at it for one weekend, I’m guessing I had maybe 10 or 12 finds. But yet it seems to have been a well received geocache, and I don’t wish I had done it differently. It depends on the person, too.As an example, in my case I think I’m excessively creative … to the point of driving my co-workers and family nuts … to the point of putting way too much time and effort into anything I do that’s different. I would feel bad if I “ignored” a geocache out there done by someone else that was like me … a newbie, but without a normal MRI.

How can one evaluate another persons cache, without going thru the process of planning, placing, and maintaining one of their own. Instead of just looking at the numbers, check the quality of the persons hides first. Numbers don’t always reflect quality.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Given what you wrote that many of them are garbage, then maybe they really DO only have a few finds. If that’s the case, then they probably should have found several more before deciding to hide one.Actually, he only has 131 cache finds. He doesn’t like to hunt them…he likes to hide them! I’ve been in contact with this person via emails on more than one occasion after someone I travelled w/ was hurt while searching one of his hides. His opinion (as expressed in the emails) is that if he doesn’t hide them there won’t be any to search for in that area. He’s very wrong…what he’s doing is ruining it for people who would gladly hide and maintain caches on a permanent basis. He saturates the area leaving no parks for others to use.
There are many people who hide many caches and maintain them well. Or at the very least check them if someone has issue with them. I don’t think you should hide one if you’re not going to keep it going and in good condition! But that’s me…what do I know?

You’re not talking about me, are you? I know I’ve got over 1000 finds. But I really do have a few hides as well. I even maintain them (regular checks as well as “special” runs if someone posts a no find. You aren’t talking about me, right?
MajorBrat06/24/2005 at 4:34 pm #1749771Hmmm, how many caches should one place?
I would say in the ball park of 10-20 caches.
Some areas don’t have as many geocachers, so a geocacher can get away with placing more caches. In urban settings, we have many more geocachers and we are archiving more and more caches due to proximity issues.
On a daily basis, I’m archiving new cache submission because they are too close to other geocaches in the area. We are starting to see signs of over saturation in certain areas.
My personal opinion is, if I’m hiding so many caches that I’m skimping on container, contents, and logbook, then I have too many out.
So I would say in most circumstances, no more then 10 – 20 caches :-). That’s my opinion.
