We want to place a few caches out there, since we’ve enjoyed finding so many others already, and we are in need of some assistance in finding out who rightfully owns property, if its not posted, or lived on…I have a few areas in mind, and will discuss specifics if someone can help….thanks in advance.

The best thing to do is go to the local court house. Most have a big county map of the plat book. Can also check witht the mapping dept.

Depending on your county, a lot of the info might be online. I know Dane and Sauk County each have a great GIS system online where you can locate the property by address, on a map or by township/section. You might want to start there first and then verify at the courthouse.

Here is a web page with links to regional mapping and land information for southeast Wisconsin.

Unfortunately if you are looking to put something in Milwaukee county, there is not one online mapping tool for the whole county. Some communities (Milwaukee, Greenfield) have some good applications for checking property owners, boundaries, assessments, etc. while others (Oak Creek) don’t provide this information online.

I would also say visit the courthouse. The surveyor (has plat maps), the treasurer (sells county plat books), or the register of deeds (where all properties are recorded, certified survey maps and plats), anyone of these 3 could help you out. Our county website lists property owners throughout the county by name, address, or section, town, range, and 1/4 1/4 through a land records search program.

Big thanks to all that offered help. I found exactly what I was looking for, and the land maps are pretty cool, for future use too. Thanks again!
