Anyone know of a class or whatever or whomever that teaches how to use a compass properly. I have searched under Orienteering and have come up with nothing. Even looked at the YMCA to see if they had classes and didn’t find anything. Thought maybe the DNR had something or the Rangers in the park system. Looking for something in N.E. WI.

Try the literature racks at outdoor outfitters such as REI, Gander Mountain, or Fleet Farm. Milwaukee Map service once had a Tri-fold brochure that was very good.

Cathunter probably knows a good source around Manitowoc.

Tomorrow I will be teaching our churches Lutheran Girl Pioneers (youth group for 3rd grade to 8th grade similar to scouts) about compass use and map reading.(my wife is teaching sewing to my boy pioneers) perhaps I will have to bring some material along to teach a crash course while driving to “the gauntlet” (well OK maybe not the best words to use)

although it is easier to teach from the “shotgun” seat in the van [ ]

Go to your local Boy Scout office. They will have good books available about compass use. If you have specific questions I would be glad to try to help you.

I learned from a book at the library, many many years ago before GPS went mainstream…probably before GPS, period!
using a compass, map reading, topo maps, etc.

Still good stuff to know, not just the compass.

I believe there is a Coast Guard station around there? The Kenosha Coast Guard gives an excellent class on navigation. You should check with the local branch.
