How Will Rising Gas Prices…

Good topic.

You know, I’ve been soul searching for quite a while now and feel that Geocaching is very OPEC friendly. Look at all the gas and money we spend on this sport. It is a great form of recreation, unfortunately it involves so much driving to get to caches.

Due to gas demand and gas prices, I’m currently riding my motorcycle everywhere I go. If that get’s too expensive, I’ll start riding the moped . I can certainly afford to pay for the gas, but my vehicle is not friendly to our atmosphere.

I’ve curtailed ALL unnecessary driving until the situation improves. I probably won’t geocache until things improve, unless I’m on vacation.

impact your caching habits?

We’re planning to try to group our hunts for caches in close proximity to each other, rather than one here, one there. Going with friends and sharing expenses will help, as well as add to the fun.

We need to ammend the 528 rule to read 52.8 feet between caches. I think ths will solve most all our gas price issues as related to geocaching.

We have always tried to plan quite a few cache hunts in the same general area, when traveling out of our zip code. Some times we get them all done, some times we don’t, but it is nice to have a bunch loaded in the GPS ahead of time.

We like to carpool to events…carpool while geocaching….and also, we wait for a batch to pop up instead of going out for one at a time.
Same thing with hiding caches…we try to plant 2-3 close by. Tami

I like caching and gas prices won’t slow me down or my distance to drive to get there. It’s finding time to go that’s the problem…….

Maybe we should organize a car pool event and visit all the “park ‘n’ hide” caches that have been increasing rapidly too.

Let’s pool our resources and buy a big yellow bus (40 passenger) and cache (v.t.) in a group. Does any one have a CDL?

before my medical problem that left me legally blind, I did have a CDL. Sadly, I’m afraid I can’t accomodate any more.

On the other hand, because I don’t drive, we’re down to one vehicle in the house and a lot less miles being driven. The overall gas bill has probably gone down despite the higher prices.

How will it affect my caching? Probably not a lot. We don’t go out that often anyway. So when we do get time to do one, it’s usually a single and not TOO far away.

We’ve wanted an SUV for a few years, but couldn’t justify the price and gas cost before (we both drove over 20 miles one way to work). Finally Ford came out with an SUV Hybrid. At the end of July we picked up a 2006 Escape Hybrid…luckily just in time for this recent spike in prices. We’ve been averaging 35 miles to the gallon. That is now our cache-mobile. Caching is our one ‘together’ activity that combines activity with adventure, so I doubt we’ll cut down too much.

My last 20 finds have been from a bicycle, but now I’ve exhausted nearly all the nearby caches. The nearest now are at the outer limits of my energies. One thought is to throw the bike on the car, bike to a location and find all of those nearby caches. That’ll work as long as the weather holds, otherwise it is pay for the gas or wait for the price to come down.

We rarely drive anywhere for the sole purpose of finding geocaches. It’s a matter of not wanting to waste gasoline and time and cause more air pollution. Most often our geocaching happens when we are going to a particular area for other reasons, such as business, vacation, etc. We will look for a geocache if we have extra time and want to discover a place that a local geocacher has suggested might be a cool area to see and/or hike.
