Hypothetical situation (say, in some alternate universe):
To be a geocacher, you are required to find a minimum of seven caches a week but no more than 70 caches a week. How many caches would you choose to find each week, and how would you find them? (# days caching, # finds in an outing, etc.). Assume ideal caching conditions for each day, and feel free to add any creative details and variables.
01/21/2011 at 1:38 am #1942177Thank you for the question.
If I had to find seven in a week I would probably use one of two tactics. I could go out and find one or two during my lunch hour all week or I would just make a numbers run on a weekend. When my daughter and I were doing that last summer we could easily get the 7 in an hour, or we could take all day. I guess what I am saying is that this requirement would not be difficult for me and I would make it work.

Interesting question, thought I was reading a puzzle cache description for a second their. 😆
Since we do most of our caching on weekends I would say a weekly numbers run on Saturday or Sunday would work best for us. Though I think we would have to reserve the right to make an occasional FTF attempt if and when the opportunity presents itself.
01/21/2011 at 3:14 am #1942179Geocaching for me has been about the people and the places. It is something that I enjoy doing outside of work. I have been both the “every day” cacher, finding a cache or two on my way to work, finding a couple at lunch and finding a few on the way home. Really, there is nothing like coming back from “lunch” with mud all over your pants. I have been the “100 cache day” cacher where the goal is to reach 100 finds before we can stop. It really has depended on the new caches in the immediate area, friends who are available to go geocaching and having the time.
In your example, my “every day” cacher would mean having a goal of 10 a day. In my “100 cache day”, using your example it would be 70 in a day.
I see advantages and disadvantages to each style but really it is your personal choice how and when you geocache.
Now, in a perfect world, being able to find 10 caches a day, every day .. sweet!!
01/21/2011 at 3:19 am #1942180In my alternative universe, Neil Young is God, and his First Commandment comes from his song, Powderfinger: “Numbers Add Up To Nothing.”
Therefore, I would find as many or as few as I happened to feel like, and not worry much about the 7/70 rule. Yeah, even in the alternate universe, I would enjoy being an iconoclast.
That said, in this universe, I generally find on average about 7 caches/day so I guess that is about 49/week. I try to not watch the numbers so much, but the 7 cache/day average has held pretty steady for several years now, despite lots of changes in other aspects of my life.
How I cache varies some, but generally I like to “target” a particular cache that I want go get, and then get everything else that happens to be in the area, and along the way.
Thanks for a question that allowed me to work in my second favorite Neil Young lyric, “Numbers Add Up To Nothing.”

01/21/2011 at 3:27 am #1942181When we go out caching, we usually leave the house at the drop of the hat, Most of my weekends are long weekends, so we head out on Thursday night, come home sunday, Some weekends are 100+, some are less than 20 depends on where we head to with the camper. We have never set a limit on the minimum or maximum that we want to find, we would rather enjoy the areas that caching brings us too.
01/21/2011 at 2:57 pm #1942182I would first relocate my residence to the mainland to be able to achieve this goal.
Second, I personally like to find an interesting “core” cache (one that I find particularly interesting) and work a radius around this one locating the others and getting to know and learn more about an area. Numbers would be adjusted when needed.
Now the reader needs to read into my answer what I mean by my answer…
01/21/2011 at 7:14 pm #1942183In this alternate universe, I would attempt to find 7 caches a day. The first day I would travel 7 miles to find a cache. The second, I would travel for 7 hours. On the third day, I’d do a 7 part multi. On the fourth day, I’d travel 77 miles for one. On the fifth, I’d travel 77 minutes. On the 6th day, I’d take 7 friends, to 7 caches in 77 minutes, all within 77 miles of home. On the 7th day, I’d plant 7 caches.
8)01/22/2011 at 3:00 am #1942184In a perfect universe I would not have to work so I could go caching all day everyday and had enough money to live and get gas for the truck. I would most likely try to do at least one a day and a different type each day. And if I could I would try to get a school group, law enforcement, news media, fellow cacher, or a newbie. To come out and find at least 7 caches and mix it up depending on who is with me between all the different types of caches out there. Try to spread the love of caching to as many people who would hear me and join me. I am not about the numbers for me it is more about meeting other people and sharing stories and having fun.
