Disappointed isn’t the word. The base maps essentially have the interstate system ONLY. They are useless. If you want autorouting, City Navigator NT is basically your only choice. If you don’t care about autorouting, you can either get the TOPO maps, find a discontinued map package on Ebay, or try the user created maps available at in the links section. We navigated with the topo maps for a long time. Eventually we decided the autorouting was worth the extra cost (something about the fifteenth time we tried to navigate down a “power line” or railroad on the topo maps…)

The base map sucks. Instead of spending more money right away you can look into some of the free maps that people have made here:

The last two Garmin GPS I bought came with Mapsource Trip and Waypoint Manager CD, you need to Install this before you can Install any of these custom maps, since you need Mapsource Installed first. Here is detailed instructions for using these maps. If your GPS doesn’t come with the CD like mine did, I think there is another way to get Mapsource installed mentioned in this how too below.

None of these free maps autoroute Like Garmins City Navigator does, so if you need those features you’ll end up buying maps eventually anyway.
