“Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires”08/09/2005 at 3:54 am #1758979Does the explorist work with Magellan’s MapSend software, V3.00a? I will bring that.
08/09/2005 at 3:56 am #1758980Is the Explorest uploaded through the SD card? I take it you need to put the card in a reader/writer and transfer the waypoints though the writer? Or, is there a cable for direct upload?

The GPS memory and/or SD card simply acts as a flash drive.
There are 2 common ways to do it. The Magellan way is to use their “Magellan Geocache Manager” program that comes with the GPSr to upload with the unit’s USB cable.
The other way is to use the newest version of GSAK to export the correct file type to your pc. The file can then be uploaded to the unit via it’s USB cable OR you can upload it to an SD card through a reader/writer.
The unit does not come with an SD card. It has some 8MB of internal memory that can be uploaded to. I mention this because some people might have an SD card, and some may not, so the SD reader/writer is not a solution for everyone. BUT, the upload procedure with the USB cable is basically the same.
08/09/2005 at 2:18 pm #1758982I will be bringing my data cable for uploading if someone has the newest version of GSAK. OR I can bring my laptop to load to the explorist as long as I can get ahold of the file to load on GSAK.

“Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires”08/09/2005 at 3:39 pm #1758983I have the latest version of GSAK which is capable of uploading the Explorist. I haven’t used GSAK before so I’m hoping someone can give me some pointers
08/09/2005 at 6:30 pm #1758984Okay, I’ve been working a lot lately and have only had a few minutes here and there to get online. Today I have more time so I have something to say about this pre-load thing.
While I understand the desire of those who wish to load their GPSR’s early, I completely agree with the decision of the picnic commitee to keep the file to themselves until Saturday.
It makes me laugh to think that people are so worried about the “electronic” moment. What ever happened to the time of manual input? Have we become so lazy that we can’t sit for a few minutes and press a few buttons on our GPSR’s? C’mon people…get real! Stop relying so much on the dang computers and the search for the FTF and just go cache! Just because there is a file, doesn’t mean any of us has a right to it. The only thing we ARE required to receive is the numbers…but how that happens isn’t up to anyone but the picnic commitee. How is it that we can walk 10 miles in a day, but we can’t press buttons our GPSR’s?
How many events have gone on without ANYONE having a laptop to use for downloading files? Too many to mention. I’ve been to several!
We should be thankful for four basic things that I can think of:
1)The event itself
2)The people planning
3)Those attending
4)The opportunity to even search for and log temporary hidesI’m sure there are other things that you can think of but this is my list. So lighten up, get off the backs of the planners, and pick up your cache listing page when you get there. (Any files available for electronic download are shared through the kindness of those supplying them.)
***NOTE***
If you absolutely can’t stand the thought of the manual input, let me know. I’ll do it for you! Or laugh about it in your presence!08/09/2005 at 6:48 pm #1758985quote:

Well Brat I do appriciate everything that the picnic commity does for us. And as for the inputting, Do you get the file downloaded to your GPS like the rest?
As for beeing lazy, I dont think so. I’ll input all day. Its just a convienence for us with the newer explorist that has programming problems, So whats the problem with solving a issue by asking the questions here. After I found out they will have a the neccessory programs available I backed off and said Thank you as stated a few up. So think you need to grow up with the “Laughing in my face” as people like you deffinately makes me think twice about comming to events to see such GOD people like you.

*Side Note*
I do thank all the commity members for their hard work on this event and thank you for working on this issue to make things better and easier for the better kind of the WGA.

Thank you very much for only quoting a portion of my post. It’s important that attention is brought only to this part, and taken completely out of context! That way people can see how truly rude I really am (in case they were doubting that fact).
However, I think if you’re going to quote something I say, you should use my exact words. They were “…in your presence”…
“GOD people”…what the heck does that mean? Perhaps you should read my ENTIRE post again. It was a general statement and at no time attacked any one person or group, but thanks for drawing that attention to yourself. “GOD people”…
As for seeing me, you really don’t have to. There will be enough others there for you to enjoy spending time with. You really don’t have to see me at all. I however will be happy to see everyone in attendance…you included. (And ask anyone who knows me, I laugh at everything…all the time! Nothing is off limits!…Oh, and…the name is MajorBrat! I earned it!)08/09/2005 at 9:18 pm #1758988quote:

Actually … I like everything you said!
And I quoted all, just to make sure you know that I really like ALL of it.
When people put in the effort to plan something, others should do their best to be thankful for what has been planned and overlook “wish lists” that didn’t come true. As a person who planned an event, the most frustrating part is others “second quessing” your decisions. Me personally, I released the coordinates in advance and will likely do so again in the future … but, it does come at the price of wondering what’s going on your “stage” before the “show” starts … I can see where early release of coordinates can lead to some problems and I respect the committees decision to keep things under wraps.08/10/2005 at 1:43 pm #1758989quote:

Thanks! The first event I remember having an early coordinate release was the one that Team Badger did last year @ New Glarus. I believe it was suggested by our logistics officer and the rest of the command supported his idea. There were a couple of people who felt the need to do a search before the event started (there are always a couple who have to buck the system), but most waited for the bell to ring before jumping on the trails.
So…thanks again for the note and I’ll just wait for Saturday to get my coordinates!

Oh! So you do want the coordinates in advance! <
> 08/10/2005 at 3:50 pm #1758991Ok, I’ve temporarily loaded the Explorist 600 software on my computer. I’m hoping the 600 version will transfer to all Explorists.
I’m assuming I use the Geocaching waypoint manager to upload to the Explorist? I’ve imported our picnic .gpx file to the Geocaching Manager. I can’t attempt a transfer at this point since I don’t have a maggy here.
Hope this works for you Explorist folks.
