….consider taking a break from caching and come to the LaCrosse Storytelling Festival. Starts tomorrow night at 6:30 with scary stories, including mine (complete with my djembe to add terror to the telling!), then on Saturday there are kids stories, river stories, Irish stories (me again) and in the evening…..adult storytelling cabaret with the national tellers and grown up beverages!

It’s a lot of fun and the national tellers, Elizabeth Ellis and Jackson Gilman, are sensational. Plus, you can look for many nearby caches in between shows!

It’s taking place in Myrick Park.

I was thinking of doing something with my 12-year-old daughter this weekend before I spend the next 1.5 months with my son and the marching band. I was going to go to Ladysmith, but this sounds intriguing. I looked quickly at the event page but I have some clarifying questions.

    – It looks like there are stories told all day long. Is that correct?
    – What are “children’s activities” and are they more for young kids or multiple ages?
    – The adult cabaret is not recommended for anyone under 18. Is it really that bad or more just a CYA to keep people from being offended.
    – If I did this, is it entertaining enough that this is all I’d do, or should I plan on geocaching, too?
    – If I geocache, does anyone have a bookmark list of fun, but not ridiculously challenging, caches in the La Crosse area?

    Thanks.

    Hi Ruth,

Children’s activities are likely to be stuff like face painting. The stories throughout the daytime, whether in the kids’ area or the other tents, should be fun for any age. In the evening, the stories *could* be more adult-flavored, or just more adult-themed. Depends on the tellers.

There are some fun caches throughout Hixon Forest nearby. You could use this one for a starting point for a PQ.

If you set your search for about 3-5 miles, you should get lots. Be aware that a black bear has been roaming in Hixon, though I’ve never been lucky enough to see it. There are some really clever ones by akahix, but they might be a bit challenging.

I can go to a storytelling festival and spend the day there. That’s me. But I do tend to see families coming to this event and spending the day. There will be music and food vendors on site, too.
