For those of us who cache or may cache in IL-
I attempted today to place a 1/1 micro cache at a place I have always enjoyed. My request was promptly shot down due to non-compliance with the IL DNR policy. I didn’t even know they HAD a policy. Good info here for others that may be effected- http://dnr.state.il.us/lands/Landmgt/Programs/DayUse/Geocaching.htmThis really makes me see the value of the work several of you have done with the WI DNR. Thanks to Brian, Ken, and all the others who have been out there helping make WI Geocache friendly!

11/15/2003 at 10:11 am #1736011It looks like the caches we have found on lands managed by the I-DNR were either placed before the policy went into effect or they were placed under the radar. It also appears that there has been little or no input from our I-peers in the establishment of this policy. No provision has been made for caches other than traditional [in clear ‘Tupperware’] or virtual. I was amused by the size restriction ~ how did they come up with those numbers? And amused by the requirement to list the initial contents of the cache. The items in any cache are subject to change with every visit and without any control by the cache owner. While a maintenance schedule is an excellent idea, 30 days may be too infrequent for a new cache and too frequent for a cache that has been in place for a while. Yada, yada, yada.
My opinion of the regulation is that it shows that the I-DNR is concerned for the welfare of the lands they manage and for allowing reasonable usage of those lands. But this policy was crafted by individuals with no more than a superficial understanding of our R.A.S.H. [recreation, activity, sport, hobby]. There is reason to believe that the I-DNR would be open to input from the geocaching community to develop this policy to a more refined state.

11/15/2003 at 9:45 pm #1736013Not too bad of a policy, but… physically checking the cache every 30 days and then letting the I-DNR know by writing seems excessive. I would hate the be the one to receive and track all the emails about from owners visiting the caches.
