I know there are several geocachers from Wisconsin who like to frequently cross the border to the south to cache in Illinois.
Be aware that the rates on the Illinois tollways are increasing beginning Jan. 1st. If you have an IPASS system, you will pay the current rate, however if you are one who has to pay cash, the rate will double for cars and triple for trucks.
Therefore, if you are traveling I-94 south, the Gurnee toll plaza, which currently costs you 75 cents each time, will now cost you $1.50 each time you pass through. However, if you have the IPASS device, you still pay 75 cents. The rate increases apply for all toll plazas and toll booths on the exit ramps.
You can get an IPASS system at all Jewel-Osco stores in Illinois. There’s one store in Kenosha that sells it (7401 Green Bay Rd., Kenosha). You can purchase it before going into Illinois and call the 800 number given to activate it. Then you’ll pay the current rate instead of paying double. You can also order it online if you’re not in a hurry for it.
http://www.getipass.comOf course you can avoid the tollway by taking other major highways, like U.S. 41 and U.S. 45 if you are heading south into Chicago.
The IPASS costs $50 ($10 deposit + $40 in prepaid tolls). It would be worth the investment if you travel to Illinois frequently. Otherwise pay double and plan accordingly. Happy New Year from the Illinois Tollway!

01/01/2005 at 2:07 pm #1748219If you’re going south into Illinois, there’s no reason to stop at that tool anyway. Get off on US-41 for five miles or so, cut right on IL-21, then take Grand avenue back to I-94. It might add five minutes to your trip, but at least it’s free.

Thanks for the warning and the info on where to get an iPass device. For those who head south from Beloit, if you haven’t been in a while, they finally eliminated the 15 cent toll between I90 and that little section of road that takes you to I39.
Getting off I90 at hy 20 and heading south on 251 (old US 51) is a nice alternative to tolls. Hy 30 is an OK alternative to I88 but again, adds miles and I’m not sure it gets you past any tolls. Been too long since I’ve taken back roads.

Since we started geocaching, we only take backroads!
It adds miles and smiles
01/02/2005 at 12:40 am #1748224Have IPass, Will Travel. I’m all for user fees and it is Wisconsin’s shame that we don’t have tolls here too.
One observation on fairness, in Pennsylvania on the turnpike, a motorcycle with a tiny trailer pays more than a car! In San Francisco a motorcycle can cross the Golden Gate Bridge and not pay the $3 toll. Truely enlightened people.
