Insect Protective Clothing

Has anyone tried and/or purchased Insect Protective Clothing. Such as this apparel (see link):

How well does it work in Wisconsin?

Does it repel ticks as well as mosquito’s??

Is it as good as advertised?

How long has your clothing lasted with the built in repellent?

for the cost, it may be cheaper to get some Permethrin and treat your own clothes. May not last 70 washes but retreating seems more economical IMHO.

Karen and I are going to look into using this I think, she has allergic reactions to most bug sprays out there.

REI sells it both in Brookfield and Madison. It’s also available at Cabela’s, and Bass Pro Shops. I’ve also seen it on Amazon.com as well.

be certain to follow directions. it is not meant to contact your body while it is still wet. needs to dry at least 2 hours (4 hours in high humidity).

anybody try the deep woods OFF Dry yet?
I got a can but haven’t needed it yet.

Permethrin is used on humans to eradicate parasites such as head lice and mites responsible for scabies; the common prescription is Permethrin with 5% concentration for scabies, and OTC (over-the-counter) treatment for head lice/crabs is usually permethrin with 1% concentration. However, the British National Formulary states that permethrin has low efficacy in eradicating head lice[citation needed].

Permethrin is also used in industrial and domestic settings to control pests such as ants and termites.

It can be found in pretty much any spoting goods store. Heck, even our local Boy Scout shop carries the stuff. I think we even got a can or twoat Walmart a few years ago.

Just make sure to treat clothing outdoors and pay attention to wind direction when spraying. 😀

I have used the permathrin base products from Repel and Cutter on my treated cloths: socks, pants, shoes or boots, and shirt the last 4 or 5 years. Like everyone has said here be careful when applying and let it dry. I have had no problems with any treated clothes after three washings. In this very hot weather I would like to wear shorts, but it seems to open an area for the ticks to get in. Even with the treated clothes I have got them in my hair, but no where else. I don’t where a hat or that may solve that hair issue. I’m going to try treating some shorts, inside and out, as well as some underware and see what results I get. I was caching north of Antigo this pass weekend, and thought I had on my treated pants, that was the only place where I found a few ticks. Made a wardrobe change the next day no ticks at all! None in my hair either, cause I treated my cloth viser, so now I’m definetly going to try the shorts thing. I have gotten both products at Wal-mart, Fleet Farm, Gander Mtn, and a few different Bait Shops. They seem to carry more in spring, but I have picked it up latter in the season, and for close out prices too. I noticed this weekend the deer flies buzzed around but would not land on the shirt, but did land on skin, but not very long. Good Luck whatever your choice!
