I use a PDA for paperless, and just have my cell phone with me in case I get into trouble that I can’t get myself out of. I have also used it as a camera on the trail. Of course, half the time I forget it and leave it in the car anyway.

01/26/2010 at 8:24 pm #1921019I just got a new phone right about Thanksgiving. It’s a Samsung Memoir that can surf the web, and has Telenav navigation as well. Still, I don’t see myself using the nav system while on the trail, but, and this is probably going to be a rare thing, I can see having web-access being handy on occasion when looking for a clue for a hard to find cache. Secretly, it’s aprt of the reason I chose the phone. I’ll most likely get more use out of the 8MP camera it has. One less thing to carry on the trail.

Nope. We cache without paper. All that’s needed is something like a PDA or the fancy Oregon GPSr that all the cool kids have. We’re not cool, so we use our nuvi like a PDA.
I partially resemble your Oregon statement.
I have all I need with that unit. I do not NEED internet on trail nor would I want it. Like many others I have a Cell Phone with me for safety reasons alone….again, it’s only on when I cache or bike ride….the rest of the time it lives cold and dark in my desk drawer.01/26/2010 at 10:00 pm #1921021Well Gary, we’re joining the ranks of fancy Oregon users any day now, thanks to a “preferred customer” email and deep discount. Not as fancy as yours, but fancier than what we have now!
And yes….it will eliminate us hauling the nuvi along for the write ups and such. But I still don’t want to be surfing the web while out on the trail. That’s just me, though (and the even more Luddite Trekkin’).

Woot!
Another convert.01/27/2010 at 5:59 pm #1921023Actually, I used my internet on the trail to look up some obscure Monopoly trivia, required to find the next waypoint on a multi. Beats the heck out of searching for the nearest open library.
01/28/2010 at 1:19 am #1921024I use internet on the trail frequently, didn’t think I would but I’ve found it comes in handy to check the cache status (I’m bad at updating pq’s), one time I was on a hike to a cache and I thought I’d look up the details and discovered it was archived about the time I arrived on location, decided to look anyways and found the cache!
Also, have used internet to look up answers to riddles (if you have cached in Hixon Forest you’ll know the cache I’m refering to).01/28/2010 at 2:08 am #1921025We got those Hixon caches. I just an a “words” person, so we sat and admired the surroundings until it clicked for me.
I can see the many advantages and they make sense….just not for us! Total Luddites! Thanks for all your responses; there are uses I had not even considered.
