Is there any way of using an Ipod touch for caching?
05/17/2009 at 2:08 am #1907866should be:
the gc.com app should also work
you will obviously not be able to check caches “live” while in the woods unless there’s free wifi there.
05/27/2009 at 2:09 am #1907867I have tried both applications in the field using an iTouch and found them not ready for prime time. A smart use of GSAK and a modern GPSr beats them both. I have hopes for the gc.com app but the other seems to have fatal design flaws.
And there is the psychological problem of losing/dropping the iTouch.
05/27/2009 at 2:23 am #1907868I would think that, assuming one has internet connectivity, one could just use a browser and connect directly to geocaching.com. Seems to work on a blackberry, et al.
05/27/2009 at 2:59 am #1907869TDJ – yes, it does work just fine, the app loads it faster it seems and into nice little area’s, allows for posting of field notes for later log conversion, saving for offline use.
In short, web works just fine, the app is just “handier”.
06/16/2009 at 2:41 am #1907870Geocaching v2.1 has been published — fantastic for iPhone and iTouch… PQs!. Ayefon app now appears very obsolete.
06/18/2009 at 6:22 pm #1907871just got the update to 2.1 and i wish i hadn’t. the app crashed and won’t even load. there seem to be a lot of bugs in it.
you can now load a pq updated within the last 7 days, but they don’t stay in the ipod touch unless you individually click them in. you can’t manipulate them in gsak first.
i’m sticking with igeocacher.06/19/2009 at 2:51 am #1907872i’ ve been using the geosphere app on my ipod touch.. its the cats pajamas
06/23/2009 at 9:49 pm #1907873I’ll second the vote for Geosphere. I downloaded it last week and it’s amazingly useful to me. I am using it on an iPod Touch (i.e. no wireless signal in the field), and I mostly wanted it for going paperless…not as a GPS.
Being able to create your own folders and move caches around in them is quite helpful.
I love the app!07/02/2009 at 3:14 am #1907874Anybody got an app that allows you to map out all geocaches in an area and view the map without a wifi signal.
07/02/2009 at 3:39 am #1907875I’ve never been exposed to GSAK since I’m entirely Mac with no cross-over program that will work on my G5, so maybe I’ve been missing out. But then I’m not a hard core cacher either.
I’ve been using my iPhone 3G standalone for caching since last fall and up until recently was pretty darn happy with it. Again, maybe I’ve been handicapped this whole time and don’t know how good some of you have it, but it’s worked for me.
Lately though, the accuracy has gone all sour. It used to be pretty spot on, when I had a signal mind you, and put me right on top of caches. The last time I was out there were instances of being 50-75 feet off. Not sure if it was a fluke, operator input error, or translation issue from one program to the next, but it was pretty frustrating.
I suppose I should get myself a cheap back-up unit so I can at the very least, Navigate to the cache!
