This was supposed to be our big day…finishing the Delorme pages, getting earthcaches, cleaning up some counties and other assorted goodies. We’d planned a great itinerary of fun puzzles, Kettle Moraine hikes, oldest cache in the state and other fun stuff, all with an eye to getting these things when we had to travel for a graduation party anyway.
Not to be. We basically got whatever we could between bolts of lightning to grab the delorme pages and called ourselves lucky.
Oh, and our basement…..it’s wet again. This will be the THIRD time since the August floods we’ve had to tear it up and replace padding. If this ground doesn’t dry out pretty soon, we’ll have to raise this place up on stilts!
Glad everyone made it through safely. Tornados here, but our place is okay other than the water.
06/08/2008 at 11:23 pm #1890126No finds today. First one we tried was in a park (Delafield) where all of gravel path were washed away and kids in swimsuits were up to their waists in the flooded areas. Next we tried for a FTF (Menomonee Falls) and never found WP1. A passerby walking a dog said this entire area had been under water this morning. This is getting very depressing. It just clouded up and started raining again. Our total in Sussex so far this weekend is a little over 5″.
06/09/2008 at 12:14 am #1890127Glad I was caching in St. Croix this weekend instead of home in MeNoMonee falls. Good weather Good caches = good time.
06/09/2008 at 12:35 am #1890128After the first run of rain this morning I went for a ride on the Cachecycle. Low and behold at the farthest point away from home the sky got dark and then a bright flash. Zoiks I better get home quickly. I didn’t make it home quick enough as I was completely soaked except for the cell phone because I found one of those free doggie doo bags to put it in thm wrap it up and put in my pocket. Other than that I had to ride 5 miles in a downpour. At least I am clean now?
06/09/2008 at 1:40 pm #1890129Last nights rain brought the total at our house in Sussex to 7″. I think the term “Cache Rescue” is going to take on a new meaning.
06/09/2008 at 2:09 pm #1890130As of right now, the long range forecast for this coming weekend looks fabulous. I’m looking forward to going “hunting” this weekend.
If you head out, make sure to bring along plenty of mosquito and tick repellent!! With all of the standing water and moisture that is sure to hanging in the air, the mosquitoes will be out in full force!!
06/09/2008 at 3:15 pm #1890131Well I sure hope this is a nice weekend…I have roofing to do.
There is a local business that has their outside storage building under water….there are LITERALLY fishes swimming in the building; carp and blue gills. 😕
06/09/2008 at 7:42 pm #1890132Anyone see the news clip from Lake Delton? Unbelieveable! Houses floating down the river. They said after the ground and, I think they said hwy A, was washed out, Lake Delton dropped by more than 6ft. Never seen anything like it. At least not in Wisconsin.
06/09/2008 at 8:46 pm #1890133All weekend I kept thinking of the line from the old Bill Cosby “Noah and the Ark” routine. Every time Noah would start kvetching, God would interject, “Noah, how long can you tread water?”
Quite a few of the caches left on my to-do list (at least within 20-30 minute drive) were temporarily bumped up to 5-star terrain, as they required special equipment (a boat) to retrieve. With the Menomonee River so high, though, that was an opportunity to get the caches situated high up in trees, assuming you don’t get washed away into Lake Michigan in the process! We managed to avoid the flooding in my house, but lots of folks had the unpleasant experience of having sewage back up into their basements.
What will be truly mind-blowing will be the mosquito populations in around a week. You might want to stock up a few units of plasma in the fridge. Personally, I am an O+, and the mosquitoes seem to take advantage of my being a universal donor.
Keep dry y’all — if you are under water, you are in our prayers.

Last I heard, it’s now gone.

No more Tommy Bartlett ski show for awhile. Hard to waterski when there is no water.
We had to temporaly disable 7 of our caches due to the flooding.

Caches are dropping like flies (being disabled) around here….it seems like most of Waukesha is under water. I only had to disable two. Tapps has done, what, over a dozen …so far.

06/10/2008 at 2:15 am #1890138I just watched that video. From a news standpoint it is great footage. In fact I was awestruck. But from a personal side that is someones entire life floating down the current. I really feel for all the folks affected by the storms.
06/10/2008 at 2:48 am #1890139If they are showing the same reports in other parts of the state, downtown Waukesha is nearly underwater with the flooding of the Fox River. All the bridges to get from one side of town to the other are closed. Several parks are closed, with Police officers stationed along the road, to keep people out.
If you ever found The Nature Study cache, read his log on the rescue of the cache .. GCVQV6.
