Is THIS a “Found” or “Not Found”

I think the most correct answer is: whatever the cache owner decides.

Myself, I would have posted a note, and let the cache owner decide if it should be counted as a find. If so, then I would change it.

But ultimately, whatever you choose to do, and as long as the cache owner is okay with, that’s fine by me. I’ve stopped worrying about what other people count or don’t count. As long as we are all having fun.

A couple month’s back we went after “Andrae Outback” … it had several no finds before us. I discovered what was left of the caches, basically about 2/3 of the tupperware and tiny bits of the contents, which I believe was chewed up by most likely a fox. Without putting much thought to it, I mark a “found”, report that it was trashed, carried out the pieces and then the approvers shut it down. Was I wrong in mark this as a “found”?

No, you are not wrong to log the find. I surely would have!

I recently came upon a cache with contents spread everywhere, but no log book. I placed the cache back together, notified the owner that maintenance was needed and logged the find.

The same day I did another cache that all that was found was a plastic bag with a log, no container. The previous log said the container was missing. I happened to have a container and took it with me. When I found the plastic bag and log I logged it and used my new container. I logged this as a find also.

The bottom line is that it is up to the cache owner to allow or disallow a find. This is where the line “caching is different things to different people” comes to play.

Since you found the PARTS, sure….put a find on it. In my situation it was a little bit different. For “You Can’tBe Serious” I posted a note that I found what I believed to be the pencils and cap to the container, contacted the owner to let him know, and being remnents I then asked if it was ok the take a “FIND” on it. He varifed what I found and gave to OK.

Thanks for the feedback .. at the time, it didn’t even occur to me that I should ponder the issue. Regarding asking the owner, he doesn’t seem to be paying attention … no peep from him since this took place in August.

This can be sticky one, but I feel it is always safe to contact the owner and see what they think. Depending on what parts of the cache you actually found, it could go either way. I have heard stories of people claiming a find when they found what they believe HAD to be the hiding spot. Sorry folks. In my opinion this doesn’t cut it. Nor is posting a find on a very well hid cache where you find the pencil I dropped a day before and are unable to find anything else because the caches is so well hidden. Ask the owner first and then log as they see appropriate.
