Is your "first" still there?

Trekkin’s brother Timberline Echoes had been geocaching for a couple years, and kept telling us how fun it was. We thought it sounded kind of stupid. Dick had his GPSr for hunting and fishing. I’d been up doing a birding workshop at Trees for Tomorrow and met with TE for dinner one evening, and they told me we really should look into giving it a try. Fine.

So when I got home a few days later, we looked up the closest cache to our home, which was http://coord.info/GCPCBH
Interestingly, in the almost six years since that time, there are now four more in between that one and us. Another point of interest is the fact that when we started in 2006, there were not quite 25 pages of caches listed within 50 miles of our home. Now there are 109 pages of caches in that range.

“Trail Toys” is still there. In fact, we took sandlanders to it not too long ago. The rest is, as they say, history. Thank you Timberline Echoes for finally convincing us to have some fun with this goofy game!

Old Carriage Road in Madison, GC154T6 My wife (elmojessi) wanted to geocache and got this one quick before the Packers game. She thought it was awesome so made us go at half-time. Quick find and I was hooked (but missed some of the 3rd quarter.) Thanks P-38 rider (I don’t think I ever met him yet though.)

Here was our first log:

“Got the GPS unit today and decided to get out (finally!) and find a cache. We actually found a few hours of sun today, and had a great hike in fall color to find our first cache. Log was dry, but goodies were damp.

Thanks, Lil Otter and Sadowski Family, for the caches in one of our favorite state parks!”

We uploaded a photo for that one, too… a sign of things to come. Not a TFTC, but not exactly the novel I could have written for that find either.

Great topic!

Our first was a guardrail cache in Wauwatosa where we live, found with a smartphone. It’s still active. We were hooked from day one. Within about a week we bought a Garmin Dakota20 GPSr and went caching the next week in Oregon to find the location of the original cache that started it all. After the first week we started posting pictures with our cache logs; we now have over 3,000 pictures in our gallery. Our original post was one of our shortest:

“My very first find, very cool! I hope to find lots more and figure out all these links and symbols (I’m a newbie)! Thanks!!”

A find on a rogheff cache along lake michigan that was specifically designed to be found without a GPSr. It took me a bit after that one…but I got going eventually.

I learned about geocaching while teaching outdoor education in Illinois and of course told my husband about it. It wasn’t until we moved to Wisconsin that we found our first cache and gave the sport a try (even though I had taught it for 3 years!)

Our first cache was GC336B “The Marshman’s Cache”. It was placed in 2002 and over 200 people have been out to Horicon Marsh to find this cache! Now we hike these trails all the time and try to keep an eye on this cache to make sure it stays in such great shape!

I voted no, but I could have also voted yes. The no: GCQ44F (T-Rat Treasure) was my first logged find. The cache was hidden in Aug. of 2005 “My first solo find! TFTC” was my log in Aug. of 2008. It was archived and rescued in Nov. of 2010. The yes: GCNZB8 (The Flats) was hidden in May of 2005. I found it with a geocaching class in 2007, but didn’t make it back to log it as a real find until Oct. of 2010.

Omg: How fun was that this was my very first geocash and im hooked now..I took my 6yr old who is not a big woods kid but he loved the tresure hunt it was a blast.. So many neat things. Im very familiar with that area since I live near by and it still was a great challenge.

Interesting stories, and interesting memories.

Our first find was in Shambeau Park in northeast Waupaca back in late 2003. That cache is gone, it seemed the neighborhood kids kept muggling it until that CO finally gave up. The kids must have grown up or moved away, because a new cache has been there for awhile, very close to the original one.

Our first log: “We’ve lived in the Waupaca area for 16 years and never knew about this place! Lovely Fall day, nobody else was around. Hard to believe we were this close to the city. Interesting historical markers, but unfortunately, many had been vandalized so we couldn’t read everything. We found the cache, took a dwarf, and left a keychain. We will be back to this very scenic area – bet it’s really beautiful during other seasons. Gram & Gramps”

Our subsequent log for the replacement cache: “The very first cache we ever found was in Shambeau Park. That was just slightly over 6 years ago – Nov. 9, 2003. The park must have just opened back then, the historical makers were mostly new and intact, and very interesting. Now all that is left is one marker and about half the posts. And interestingly, this new cache is hidden about 30′ from where I remember the old one being placed. Sharp eyed Grandma found this ammo box as I was wandering around in nostalgia land looking for the spot where the old one was. I think I found it, but to no avail… We took nothing, and left a sig card and a AAA luggage tag. Thanks a lot for the cache and for bringing us back to our geo-roots.

I’ve had mine on my watch list since I left Arizona, but finally went back to the page today and realized that it has only been found 51 times since 2006.GCWYDN

I didn’t realize at the time or even until today that I was the 5th person to find it when I first started. I look back at my log and realize I didn’t type nearly as much as I should have considering what an adventure it was to get there.

Sadly the first cache I ever found “One Stumped Turtle” is no more. I was so excited that day as I had been caching with some friends and went 0/3. On my way home solo, I got it. Been pretty well solo since (unless you count the kids along for the ride.
The park has a vacancy now and I am planning on finding a spot there to place one.
