I just bought a Kayak specifically for Geocaching. I did swim to cram island, GCVYKT last weekend, but I was wondering ( besides OASIS) is there any other cool Island Caches within 150 miles of Appleton?
06/04/2010 at 5:01 pm #1930384Gotta run put together a nice bookmark of Island caches. Might want to check that out.
06/04/2010 at 5:02 pm #1930385Hey! Was that you in a boat last weekend going out to Oasis? We saw two guys in a boat, the one rowing was wearing a sailor’s cap, and the other was playing an accordion. No kidding! Geocachers from another place or time?
Anyway, to your question, there is a great bookmark list put together by gotta run this past winter….it’s in another thread, and likely linked into Cram and Oasis………………….Need to take a peek.
On the short list, there is Horseshoe Island in Peninsula State Park, and the lighthouses on Long Tail Point (take the Dead Horse Bay route)…..and some Cat Island or similar out there too. Do not think of going to Chambers Island in Green Bay unless you are very experienced….IMO.
Also, there are a good number of River caches, for example from Wausau to the Mississippi perhaps. Not sure they are listed in the bookmark. Lastly, of sport interest, the Fox River is developing a nice system of portages around its locks, to permit kayaking/canoeing from ? up into Green Bay
p.s. The gotta run BM List: http://www.geocaching.com/bookmarks/view.aspx?guid=0fdcfa03-20a4-42ca-b384-af2934ac5888

Since there is already an Island Cache Bookmark List, which should give you a really good start on what you specifically asked for, you may also wish to find or make a compilation of Canoe/Kayak Caches, that will capture rivers and marshes and who knows what else. I see that river caches such as CCS-series in Wausau, and “You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille” by Stevens Point are not included.
You can search attributes (boat), look at T5 caches (special equipment) – the Lonely Cache Game List has some good examples – , connect with prolific water cachers (Trekkin & Birdin, One Paddle Short???????), and/or start a thread entitled:
“HEY! I JUST GOTTA KAYAK! WHERE CAN I USE IT TO DO SOME REALLY COOL CACHING?”
Just a few further thoughts………………….
06/04/2010 at 6:30 pm #1930387Just remember that the Oasis cache is missing. Seems like a good spot if only GC or the CO would archive or repair π
06/04/2010 at 6:31 pm #1930388I have plans for that π
06/04/2010 at 6:34 pm #1930389Just to confirm, my Island Caches bookmark is limited specifically to islands, not the larger subset of “water accessible caches.” There could be a need for that larger list however.
Regarding “Oasis,” don’t hold your breath waiting for it to be repaired, and it appears no amount of “It’s not there” logs are going to put this one on the path to force-archival, which is a shame.

Couldn’t someone contact Wis Kid? Some long time cachers have made the notes. It’s not like it’s coming from some noobs.
06/04/2010 at 7:24 pm #1930391I shouldnt have made that public, but I was planning on paddling out thre and giving it one more good look. I am going to go prepared with a cache and then e-mail wiz kid and tell him that one is placed and ready to go.
06/04/2010 at 7:44 pm #1930392Went a’spying on that Island last weekend, and it is a very busy and muggly place when the boat traffic is heavy, as larger boats get funneled right next to the Island, and others fish by it. Our thought was a nano on that Island would be survivable, and make for a nice 5/5 π π
06/04/2010 at 7:54 pm #1930393Well STAY AWAY FROM MY ISLAND!!!! lol I am actually thinkin of something A little harder then that. But we will have to wait till I actually take the Kayak home ( I have to build something to carry it around in my trailer. it doesnt fit in the trunk π and then we have to see if someone beats me to it lol.

06/04/2010 at 8:31 pm #193039606/04/2010 at 8:38 pm #1930397Its a cheap entry level kayak. My wife says I spend too much on geocaching and she wants to make sure I use this one first. Its only 8.3ft
http://www.flexkayaks.com/vertex.html
Only 200 at Dicks, should be plenty for some of the river island caches. I already know this time next year after I prove to my wife that I use it, this will be on craigslist and I get me a nice one π
