Here is a start to the list:

This is obviously just a start. I know I’m missing a whole mess of caches in Wausau including the Cats Can Swim series. I did not add the Madison cache because its a puzzle so bookmarking it as an island cache may give too much away.
I will say that our “Osprey Island” cache has seen lots of activity in the past few days! As cheeto says, definitely do NOT try Oasis, or “Cat Island Chain” for that matter. Keep in mind, the ice is never “safe.”
On the Left Side of the Road...01/02/2010 at 1:49 pm #1919449I’ll have to check that out once my knee feels better.
01/02/2010 at 1:50 pm #1919450I’ll run a PQ of boat-attribute caches as well.

A couple of miles west of Townsend in Oconto County. This island has been walked to during the winter, but deep snow has caused difficulties finding the cache. We paddled to it, as have most of those who have posted finds.

01/02/2010 at 3:14 pm #1919453We’ve done the CCS series and none of them are really island caches. There is one of OPS’s near the dam, but I don’t know if it freezes over in winter enough to be safe, someone local could chime in on that one.

Here are some more we hope to do this winter. Sometimes it’s just a pain to haul the canoe all over, though that’s our preferred method of finding such a cache.

These have been done by others in the winter.

Yes, it can be done. Right out from the boat landing an ice fishing village spawns every year. If there are trucks out there you can be pretty sure you can make it to the cache ok. There is more current right near the cache so be extra careful there. Usually by this time of year snowmobiles have been up and down that section of the river and it’s a regular highway. The cache is also fairly winter friendly. You’re also right that the “Cats Can’t Swim” series does not include islands and I would also add that I am fairly certain that series along the river would include some open water pretty much all winter long.
01/02/2010 at 7:37 pm #1919455I’ve added the above caches to the ever-growing bookmark.
Running a PQ was not that productive. The only relevant PQ parameters I could think of were “Wisconsin” and “boat.”
I also filtered out everything under terrain 2.5. I know there are probably some boat caches that are under T2.5, but oh well.
But, that pulls up a mess of caches that aren’t island caches, or even solely water-access caches for that matter (i.e., Creation Cache – GCRG10). I’m guessing the ones here with “island” in the title are a safe bet. Perhaps a review of what came up will prompt some memories.

PU What a Stinker.
The BLCSome on islands but I’m not sure if there’d ever be safe ice to reach them are those GWWRKK ones in Wausau.
The Scooby Doo and Beast of Big Island ones are islands, but again, not sure if the ice is safe there.
Spires Tribute is an island. Might be winter accessible, not sure.
Lucille, I doubt it. In fact, I think Rick Blick tried and came back with paddles.
Black River Canoe cache probably not, but there is a land-based approach as well, if one doesn’t mind a really looooong hike. I’ve done it both ways.
Renos Sandbar, we’re locals and I’m just never real comfortable crossing the Mississippi except in a few really local coves filled with ice fishermen.
Mile 13–Heck, we didn’t need no stinkin’ boat, and neither did Honeybunnies! Both Trekkin’ and Seth are little guys and they waded or swam over there. Do it the fun way when the weather is warm….
The Sand in your Buns series….again, that’s the Mississippi. None of these islands are very far from shore, but except for the furthest north one, a bit of a distant hike (like at least a mile) from the nearest legal access point. I’d recommend a boat on these.
Stranded in Sherwood, we did that one on hard water in January.
I think the three in the Bone Collector series were done by a group or two in winter, but you have to gather all the clues to the first one before doing any of them. Still one of our favorite series, though.
Hope this helps. We do enjoy the use of paddles, but appreciate the effort on verifying some of these more distant ones we could hunt on hard water.
01/02/2010 at 11:04 pm #1919457My thinking is that this is an inclusive “island” cache bookmark, not limited to islands that may be safe to approach in winter.
On the Left Side of the Road...01/03/2010 at 1:15 am #1919458Nice list Gotta Run thanks. One that I haven’t seen mentioned is GCB9A8 Wet Maze. It’s an island in a marsh so a boat, kayak or canoe won’t do you any good.
01/03/2010 at 1:52 am #1919459Ok, there are 70+ caches on the list.
Not all of them are suitable for winter finds but I believe all of them are “islands.”
The list does not include caches that you might need a boat for but are not on islands (i.e., shoreline), islands that have foot access or public transportation, or marsh/swamp caches. Just trying to keep it a tightly focused list. Hope it’s useful.
On the Left Side of the Road...01/04/2010 at 3:11 am #1919460GC1C6F4 To hike or to Kayak; That is the question!
This one is not an Island Cache. Access is only available by National Forest Land, if bushwacking, or by boat from the Oconto River after having put in at a public access up river. Even if the river were frozen over you would need to trespass on private property in order to cross it from the shortest route possible.

Yes, that’s why that one was never on the bookmark list.
On the Left Side of the Road...01/07/2010 at 5:03 am #1919462We just went out today with Jerry’s Dad and found GC1G6CV Red Voodoo. Was a decient walk from the public boat launch, but we were able to find the cache. Jerry’s Dad did a search for ice thickness on that lake and it was 8 inches so very save to walk on. Even saw some 4-wheelers and snowmobiles on the lake…..wish we had one 🙂
