Okay… I was up in Manitowoc this weekend to be with my family for Easter. Very early this morning, I decided to check up on my “Cato Car Crash Cache”. I found the cache in good condition, in its origianal position, fairly well concealed.
BUT, when I popped it open, I discovered someone had left TWO MAXI-PADS in my cache! I was both amused and annoyed at the same time.
My question to everyone: Are Maxi-Pads a suitable trading item for geo-caching? I guess I personnally have no problem with this, but I know some people Geocache as a family, and bring small children along, and such items may turn a pleasant day of caching into a session of uncomfortable questions from 4-year old Johnny

Anyhow, I took them out of there. Now I have two Maxi-Pads in my backpack o’ trading items. I really have no use for them (Yes, I realize everyone will “Reply with Quote” using that last sentence, followed by a clever wisecrack).
Should I:
A> Toss ’em
B> Realize I am just being a jerk and put them back in there next time I am up that way because they may actually be as useful to a future hunter just as a disposable rain poncho or mini-key-chain flashlight could be
C> Trade them into someone else’s cache (for the same reasons listed in B)
or
D> Bring them to the next caching event and put them on the prize table
I’ll let you guys all vote on this one.
I am at a total loss.
04/01/2002 at 5:24 am #1744812Toss ’em. They were obviously put there by someone who didn’t think ahead and came unprepared to trade any items, so they dug into their purse or pack or whatever they were carrying. Tacky.

Gotta agree with Ken on this one… toss ’em. Probably someone who was more concerned with trading items than the “true spirit of geocaching”. Better to leave nothing than to leave some questionable item.
Ken, didn’t you have somebody put some condoms in one of your caches (New Prospect)? The worst thing I have found in one of my caches was a candy bar, which I promptly took out. (It was in an ammo box, so I doubt animals could break in to get the food out, but I decided to play it safe.)

Keep them in your geocashing backpack. They could be a good survival item. You could use them to stop bleeding if you get a laceration while geocaching.
You can also remove the adhesive backing and stick them to your forehead. This would provide a protective layer of padding in case you bump into a branch while caching.
They could also be used as fire starters or odor eaters in the bottom of your shoes.
These are quite practical items and everyone should carry one with them in the woods.

And Jeremy, yes, I’ve seen all manner of junk in caches from condoms to feminine products to cigarettes. Someone even put a sausage in one of our plastic containers once. Needless to say, it was soon scattered across the landscape by ravenous critters.04/01/2002 at 2:46 pm #1744816Thrax,
I can’t answer your question as you didn’t say if they were new ones or not… It might matter, especially in light of GrouseTales suggestions
04/01/2002 at 11:11 pm #1744817Toss em. Either someone blew it or they’re pulling your chain. Either way, smile be glad your cache was in good shape and just think of the stories you’ll have to tell at the campout!
04/02/2002 at 7:31 am #1744818Someone left a condom and some cigarettes with a lighter in one of my caches. I guess it was intended as a “kit”. The only thing they forgot was K-Y.
The strangest one that I came across was a condom that a couple of local hunters (you guys know who you are) had actually signed and dated. I probobly should have removed it from the cache I was visiting, but it kind of stunned me and I just put it back in and walked away. I guess there were too many mosquitoes out when they were there to put it to it’s intended use…04/04/2002 at 5:52 pm #1744819This coming from a female cacher, I find it both disgusting and hilarious! Grousetales suggestions truly made me laugh out loud. Some interesting new ways to make them useful that even I wouldn’t have thought of!
But, if you don’t have anything decent to exchange in a cache, DON’T LEAVE IT! Use your head! (No remarks!) There are a lot of family cachers out there (me included with two young boys) who do not want to explain items such as this in the middle of a cache-day!
