Here’s part of the log posted for one of our caches:

“…Its starting to accumulate a few trash items. We thought about helping clean it out but decided that we would let the owner clean it up a little if they see fit. …”

Here’s the email we sent in response:

    “Hi –

Thanks for visiting our XXXXX cache.

Please feel free to help out by removing junk from any of our caches anytime you find some in one of them. We do check on our caches periodically, but we don’t get to any of them on a real regular basis.

General concensus of the cache owners who speak up in the forums on the WI Geocaching Assoc. website is that small maintenance help from cache finders is greatly appreciated. We have begun to carry (and replace) micro logs, and quite often take nothing, but leave quite a few trinkets in nearly empty caches. We’ve also removed non-family-friendly items from caches way too often, and usually haul trash out of the area. We just see this as helping to keep our sport functioning at a high level.

Happy caching! Hope we have an opportunity to meet up on the trails sometime.

I know it is our responsibility as owners. But most of the cachers I know help take care of small problems in any cache they find…

So when I get a log like this I typically try to do a little educating and encouraging.

And something I very rarely do is make any kind of negative comment on the published website log. It just seems to be common courtesy to privately email the owner with any concerns I have about their cache.

OK, I’ve got this rant off my chest. I’ll go clean out the accumlated trash just as soon as I can. Happy New Year everybody!

Jim: I agree with everything you have written. Helping out a cache or log that needs a little TLC not only helps out the cache owner BUT helps out the next finder. To me, it “helps to keep the game going.” Keep up the great work and Happy New Year to you as well! Tami

Great comments. Yes, it is the owner’s responsibility to maintain their caches, but we all can offer a little assist when we can. Great proactive note.
